JUSTICE LEAGUE and AQUAMAN Profile: Get to Know Willem Dafoe's Nuidis Vulko

Nuidis Vulko first appeared in The Brave and the Bold No. 73 in August 1967. Bob Haney created Vulko as the chief scientific advisor of Atlantis. Vulko is highly respected and is an important political and academic figure in his city. When Aquaman was born with blonde hair, the people of Atlantis considered this to be a superstitious phenomenon known as the Curse of Kordax. Although Vulko argued against leaving Aquaman to rot in prison due to his hair color, he lost the argument. Years later, he finds Aquaman in prison. After Aquaman frees himself and gains his throne, Vulko was appointed as a regent.

Vulko has much power in Atlantis and has even been King in Aquaman’s absence. At one point, Aquaman left his throne to live on the surface world and Vulko had to deal with the backlash of that decision. Atlantis became known to the surface world and was no longer isolated. As a result, Vulko was kept busy dealing with new threats and settling uneasy nerves about the surface dwellers.

An older man, Vulko is very intelligent in politics, advising and science. He has superhuman strength (enough to hold his own against Superman) and can leap great heights and distances. Like Aquaman and all the citizens of Atlantis, Vulko can also withstand the high pressure and temperatures of the deep ocean. He is also a strong leader and often steps up to help Aquaman when he needs it most.

In the re-launch of DC Comics, The New 52, Vulko is an exiled Atlantean who helps Aquaman discover his potential and heritage. In an attempt to try to force Aquaman to take his rightful place on the throne, Vulko starts a war between Atlantis and the surface world. His plan works, but he was imprisoned due to all the casualties of the bloody war.

Actor Willem Dafoe will be playing Nuidis Vulko in the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie, JUSTICE LEAGUE and he will reportedly appear in the solo AQUAMAN movie, too. The introduction of Vulko could mean that we will be seeing the underwater city of Atlantis before the AQUAMAN movie. Although the extent of Dafoe’s role is unknown, Atlantis will be a great addition to the DCEU and it will be spectacular to see Atlantis on the big screen.
