GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2: While the First Movie Continues to Dominate the Box Office, Let's Talk Sequel Teases

Guardians of the Galaxy is the No. 1 domestic film of 2014 and continues its dominance in the box office. So far, as of the publishing of this post, it has earned over $284 million domestically and over $557 million worldwide. Not too shabby for a film deemed by many movie pundits as a huge risk by Marvel Studios.

Guardians of the Galaxy was tracking so well before its August 1 release date, Marvel officially announced its sequel the weekend before release at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con International. Also returning for the sequel is writer/director James Gunn, who is already hard at work developing the story and script for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Even though the sequel is still three years away, Gunn has been teasing the sequel and some of the ideas he is tossing around for the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (MCU) space opera. Gunn revealed Yondu, Nebula and Drax are all being looked at for larger roles.

"I know a lot of where I want to go [with Guardians 2]," Gunn said to FilmDivider.com. "I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill’s father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows.
"There are a lot of things that are part of the overall schematic that already exist, not to mention a lot of stuff about all of the cultures. There’s a lot of stuff about Xandarian and Kree culture that I’ve written down or I have in my head, as well as Krylorians and Ravagers.
"I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we’ll see more of both of those characters."

The writer/director has also teased how there will be at least one new team member addition to the Guardians in the sequel.

Gunn, who directed the post-credits scene after Thor: The Dark World which set-up Guardians of the Galaxy, confirmed the cocoon in that scene is definitely Adam Warlock. Although whether or not this means Warlock will be a part of the sequel remains to be seen.

With the mystery of the cocoon being resolved, another mystery surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy emerged. Who is the father of Peter Quill (a.k.a Star-Lord... WHO?!)? While fans instantly went to comic book universe canon to see who Quill's father is, Gunn said it won't be the same.

"[Quill's father is] definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much," Gunn said to Empire Magazine.

Finally, the most recent hint Gunn has given about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was to tell fans at Dragon Con in Atlanta that Ms. Marvel / Captain Marvel will not be in the sequel because he wants Star-Lord to be the main Earthling in the franchise. But there are a few strong female alien roles he is considering for the next film.

When you add all of this up there's not much information to figure out plot hints in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but that's because Gunn probably doesn't know which way the movie's story is going right now because he's still developing it. Stay tuned because more hints and teases are sure to come from Gunn sooner than later.
