THE GIFTED Season 1 Episode 9 Review: outfoX

Things started to really heat up this week as we barrel towards the season finale of THE GIFTED. Like the past few weeks, the show has finally begun to find a sense of focus, channeling its energy into a core series of characters, and giving us something real to work with.

We started with a bit of a history lesson as the Strucker family discussed the revelation that their great grandparents were terrorists who could vaporize entire buildings when they combined their powers. Now they have to worry about their kids being able to do the same thing. But does having the same powers mean they have the same proclivities to use them? Not necessarily.

Also, we got a mention of the Hellfire Club, which was the original concept for THE GIFTED. I wonder if we’ll be seeing any more of them in the future.

Aside from the Strucker family drama, this rest of this week’s episode hinged on the planned assault on Trask Industries. The problem was that no one was really sure how to about it. The place was heavily guarded, and they would definitely be fools to tackle it head on. This left the new girl to the part, Esme, feeling a little miffed.

So much so that she actively worked to manipulate everyone into attacking the base. The amount of effort she put into it has me feeling extremely suspicious about her actions. Picking up on Tommy’s very overt guilt is one thing, but to give Lorna such an awful nightmare is different altogether. It has me wondering if Esme is the true Hound in the ground, and she doesn’t even know it. The other woman from last week, Chloe, could have simply been a plant for Esme to gain the trust of the group. All in all, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her revealed as a double agent in next week’s finale.

I have to commend Agent Turner on his giant leaps of logic to get where he is at the end of this episode. I get the writers were trying to make him desperate, like he had nothing more to lose, but they could have at least given him more to go on than a random employee sick leave. But whatever gets the job done in the end, I suppose.

The rest of the episode was spent on the very tense assault on the power plant that powered the mounted guns at Trask Industries. But even the best laid plans can go awry and that’s certainly what happened here. Because the shoe-string theory Turner had happened to be right, the group had a team of Sentinel Service agents to deal with. It didn’t help that the only person with an offensive power was Andy, but I understand that they were going for a more stealth based approach.

It was here that I expected to see a true test of Andy and Lauren’s powers. They were trapped and had no way to escape but to blow their way out. But Andy punked out. I’m not really sure where his concern for innocent lives comes from, when he was all gung-ho to blow the court building to pieces when they needed information from that judge. But it was interesting to see that Lauren was the one who needed that feeling of power.

From here, I imagine that things switch from one rescue operation to another. Now that the team has lost Sonya, Blink, and the Strucker siblings, it looks like the Mutant Underground will have their hands full as we roll into the season finale next week.
