THE GIFTED Season 1 Episode 8 Review: threat of eXtinction

This week’s episode was all about learning secrets. Between the Strucker family and discovering the location of the new Trask building, it was a busy evening. This episode mostly worked, and I think it did so because for once, it dedicated its time to only two large story lines. This allowed for more focus. We also didn’t see anything having to do with Agent Turner and that went a long way.

The storyline involving the turned mutant was probably the weakest of the two. The opening fight scene was neat and used a fun combination of everyone’s powers. It’s just a shame that Chloe had to die and so was only able to give up such a small piece of information. I was expecting her to be in their care for a while, revealing information over the course of more episodes. It felt a little silly, but it did help bring some elements full circle, like the telepath.

Speaking of which, I’m not really sure what to take away from her comments about Kate. She’s worried that she and her husband will wind up on opposite sides of the mutant human conflict, but so far they’re on the same side. I’m not really sure how they’d split up. Everything they’re doing, they’re doing for their kids so… What would drive them apart? It was an odd comment that they didn’t linger on for too long. So maybe I’m over thinking it?

The rest of the episode was occupied by Strucker going to visit his father. It was here we finally understood why Doctor Campbell was so interested in mutant siblings and what that paper in the 60’s had to do with the story. Turns out that Strucker’s grandparents were mutant terrorists whose powers were amplified when used together. Otto – Strucker’s father – was so terribly afraid of anyone repeating his parents mistakes that he worked hard to find a cure for the X-gene.

All of this is news to Strucker because he hardly knew his father. He was a distant man, who couldn’t even bring himself to visit his son while he was in the hospital. That reason being, Otto used that X-gene cure on his son. It made him terribly ill; it almost killed his son. Otto hated himself for that and retreated into his work. He may have prevented Strucker from getting powers, but he didn’t prevent him from passing the gene to his kids.

Oh and apparently Otto has powers. I’m not really sure what they are, some kind of energy explosion. Whatever it was, it came in handy when Sentinel Services shows up out of nowhere. I’m still not sure the explanation Campbell gives is sufficient enough to explain why they just happen to be at Otto’s antique store at the exact same time Strucker and Tommy are. But this show has never been subtle about its plot or coincidences.

Otto uses his powers to buy time for his son, but dies in the process. Yet another character full of information that was killed. But it allowed Otto and Strucker to reconnect on some basis. Also Pulse was there and died in the explosion. Now Tommy has even more reason to get revenge of Sentinel Services. But at least we don’t have to worry about everyone losing their powers in fight scenes.

Overall it seemed like we made progress. There are only two episodes left in the season though. So I guess we’re heading for a confrontation with Trask Industries? There still feels likes so much groundwork that needs to be laid, but I suppose we’ll see.
