THE GIFTED Season 1 Episode 6 Review: got your siX

This latest episode of THE GIFTED felt like one step forward, two steps back. I’m still not sure what the purpose of certain characters are and character development seems to be going in circles. But at least the plot moved forward… kind of?

The episode opened with yet another flashback. This one about Tommy raising money for those wounded in the 7/15 attack. I’m not really sure what purpose this scene served. It didn’t establish anything we didn’t already know about Pulse and Tommy, and hey, people hate mutants. We got that part. It’s the basis of the whole show. It felt like wasted space.

Speaking of wasted space, Blink finally took off. It makes sense, she’s done nothing the last few episodes except be – understandably – upset about what was done to her. I guess her powers make it too easy for them to get where they need to go, or to get them out of problems. So the writers moving her out of the group is probably the smartest thing they’ve done so far.

The driving force of the episode was the heist on the federal building. For all it was hyped up to be, it was quite the lackluster affair. Sure, the parking garage next door isn’t guarded, but there are no guards in the building at all? Seemed a bit implausible that Marcus and Strucker were able to waltz right in and the guards had to come in from the outside. But at least they go those files.

Except we’re not really sure what good they’ll do. The files were apparently “very” important, but we never saw what was on them. Instead we were stuck with a scene of Tommy looking longingly at the redhead. It’s issues like these that cause the show to move a glacial pace.

For whatever reason the big theme of this episode was parents getting in the way of their kids. Kate never really liked her kids being in combat, but she understood that it was required when necessary. Now all of a sudden she’s super against the idea. This overbearing trait feels like it came out of nowhere, especially when I thought she was getting the hang of things. Understanding the mutant way of life and all that.

I also have no idea what’s going on in the Turner storyline. He invites Dr. Campbell down… why? He barely knows the man, but calls him up because he thinks he can get him his job back? How does Campbell have that kind of power? Also, for a man who lost his daughter “twice” he still seems just as angry and against mutants as he was before. By that I mean his arc would have made more sense if him losing his daughter twice was what radicalized him in the first place. The character doesn’t feel like it’s grown from its experiences.

There was also a very brief mention of the X-Men. Something about a war. These feel like little Easter Eggs peppered in to keep people interested. But they’ve already established that the X-Men have disappeared, whatever that means. Boy, I wish the show would be about what happened to the X-Men because we’re six episodes in and I couldn’t be less interested in any of these characters’ struggles.
