THE GIFTED Season 1 Episode 10 Mid-Season Finale Review

The mid-season finale of THE GIFTED picked up almost immediately where we left off last week, with the Strucker kids being taken into custody by Sentinel Services alongside Blink and Sonya. This meant the Mutant Underground was on the back foot and had to play catch up. The problem was that no one could agree on how to handle the situation.

Lorna wanted to take them head on and worry about the consequences later while the Strucker parents didn’t want to make things worse for their kids and get anyone else hurt. But who happens to be the woman with a plan? Esme, that’s who. She gives Strucker parents the idea to go to Agent Turner, who might just have enough of a heart to help transfer the prisoners from Trask and into a mutant detention center.

Meanwhile, Dr. Campbell is trying to get Lauren and Andy to cooperate with him. Also he looks a little ghoulish now with this burn marks and stitched up face. It appears we have the answer to why he wanted the twins in the first place. Something about bonding powers allowed them to isolate some part of the X-gene. Now from what Campbell said, it sounded like this will help them create a cure for the mutant gene, or some kind of virus. He referred to it as a “permanent solution”.

It was cool to see Lauren and Andy use their powers together to what we can assume is their full extent right now. Despite the near indestructible power of adamantium, the powers almost melted a hole clean through it. It was fun that a little Easter egg was thrown in as well, with Campbell mentioning that they got the metal from an abandoned military complex in Canada, which where Wolverine was made.

Unfortunately, Lauren and Andy’s unwillingness to cooperate at first led to the untimely demise of Sonya. Her death felt like it was brushed aside. Maybe when we come back next year and everyone else finds out, we’ll deal with the fall out of it, but it felt lacking. The character wasn’t exactly developed, and her relationship with Tommy was practically nonexistent. So, it’s hard to feel any emotion about her dying.

Meanwhile, Agent Turner got some unhappy visitors. The meeting went about as I expected. They played the daughter card, they played the kids card, the father card, any card they could think of. Despite all that, it seemed like the wife was most affected when Caitlyn said that Turner assaulted her house. That was the only sentence to get a reaction from her. In the end they got what they wanted though, and Turner was on his way to transferring the students.

At the same time, Esme let it slip that the Strucker’s had gone to visit Agent Turner. This obviously pissed off Lorna and made everyone suspicious of the Strucker’s when they got back. Except that they left on Esme’s idea, they said. Which meant that the Mutant Underground was about to break the peace treaty that they had set up with Agent Turner.

This was all according to plan. Except it was all Esme’s plan. Last week I had speculated that Esme would turn on the group, and that she was actually the real Hound in the group. Turns out I was half right. She turned on the group, but not because she was a Hound. Apparently, she’s part of a set of three. Three clones, all with telepathic abilities. These were the family that she was so desperate to rescue for the past few episodes. In the comics they’re all supposed to be clones of Emma Frost. Whether they go that route or not remains to be seen.

I’ll admit, the ending scene where she uses her powers to turn all the guards against each other was a great showcase of just how powerful telepaths can be. It’s all over once someone can put thoughts in your brain. Now we just have to wait and see what their plan actually is. Are they trying to create a mutant army? Are they part of something bigger?
