SUPERGIRL Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Supergirl Lives

We’re back. After a long hiatus after the DC superhero showdown, there is little aftereffects for Supergirl as she dives right back into crime fighting. Supergirl foils the plans of a group of thieves who try to kill her with a missile. Do these criminals never learn? She successfully derails their ride, but two run off right into the path of Guardian (James Olson). He loses one and Winn tries to capture him, but ends up beat up and nearly shot. While capturing the jewel thieves proved to be a challenge for Winn, it was too easy for Supergirl, who feels that she isn’t helping the citizens like she should.

At work, James and Kara both try to get Snapper to read both of their pieces about the jewelry heist, each tailored specifically on Guardians’s and Supergirl’s involvement. Snapper, in a mood, ignores them both only to be cornered by a concerned mother. After learning that the woman’s daughter has gone missing, Kara promises to get the story out and find her.

Kara goes to the alien bar to meet Maggie and is surprised to see Mon-El working there. Initially, there is little awkwardness from the kiss that they shared, but he pretended to forget. He gives her advice to be careful when looking for the missing kid. Maggie also is helpful in letting her know that several people have gone missing recently. This looks to be the work of Roulette, who is helping a creepy doctor, abduct people.

With help from Winn, Kara, finds out all the victim got blood work from the same creepy doctor. Mon-El tags along with her. They pretend to be a couple wanting in on the clinical trial, but soon realize that the doctor is an alien and that he has a portal that he’s been sending people through. Kara dons her Supergirl persona and goes through to find the young runaway, Izzie. Mon-El comes through the portal to another planet in time to realize that there is a red sun instead of a yellow sun (The radiation from the Earth’s sun gives them their powers) and the portal closed behind them.

Mon-El and Kara are kidnapped by one of the inhabitants. They convince him they aren’t trying to hurt him and find out they are on planet Maldoria, where some of the natives are kidnapping humans and bringing them back to sell them as slaves. They decide to pretend to surrender to get in and see the many humans that were abducted. Roulette confesses that after Kara shut down her alien fight club, she decided to do otherworldly human trafficking.

Hank and Alex locate the portal where Kara and Mon-El went through and prepare a plan of attack. With Hank not being able to join them on the rescue mission - due to the air being toxic to him - Alex has Winn join her (to overcome his fear of going out in the field) and a team to go through the portal and find them. Meanwhile, Kara is tortured by the guards as they try to get the humans, but Mon-El along with the others help to lock Roulette and the creepy doctor up. As Kara is getting the humans out, Mon El is face to face with the guards, but they refuse to hurt him, even bowing when they see him. Hmm? Kind suspicious. Mon-El didn’t even look surprised.

Mon-El and Kara meet up with Alex and get all the humans out. One of the Madorian’s try to take Izzy, but Alex releases a yellow sun grenade to give Kara back her powers. Kara saves Izzy and brings her home to her mother. She also finishes her story on the intergalactic slave trade and gives it to Snapper, who is begrudgingly impressed.

Alex is in new relationship bliss with Maggie until Kara gets in trouble and immediately berates herself for letting her guard down and pushes Maggie away. Maggie understands and reveals that she knows that Supergirl is Kara because of her reaction. It seems like the mantra of protecting her sister still affects all parts of her life, despite Kara’s own strength.

I like James, but the Guardian storyline is getting stale. Perhaps when Kara finally finds out, it’ll be a bit more interesting. I am more invested in Winn, who is slowly becoming more capable, even if he is best on the computer. I’d like to see more scenes with Winn, who is frankly more of an asset than James.

With the first part of the season being about how flawed Kara can be despite her desire to be a superhero and help people, it seems Mon-El will be dealing with the opposite. Mon-El seems to be inspired by Kara’s heroics especially after she loses her powers. He is used to taking care of himself, but seeing Kara try and save people even without her powers and not budging even under torture, makes him want to be a better person. I love the comparison these two aliens have, especially since they grew up differently and that affects how they act. I’m looking forward to seeing them train together.

The ending has two hooded figures looking for Mon-El on Maldoria and killing the creepy doctor after he reveals he is on Earth. I have a feeling that Mon-El is some kind of illegitimate royalty, probably from the Daxam family. If that is the case, I wonder if the whole story Mon-El told them was true and if that might be part of the reason he wants to go on the superhero path.
