New Info Says There Was a Better But Darker Cut of the FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Before Meddling

There's been many stories about what went wrong with Fox's attempt at rebooting FANTASTIC FOUR last summer. Even in the movie there is evidence of a film that had more potential than what was seen in theaters. The first Act started good but things started to fall apart in the second Act and then derailed badly at the end. The last half of the movie felt pieced together like it was trying to force itself to tell a different story than originally intended.

Director Josh Trank even went public to say how he had a better version of the movie just one year prior to what was released.

Recently there's been some reflection on the failed reboot. Writer and producer Simon Kinberg stated how the movie went too dark compared to its comic book source material. But was being too dark really a bad thing? Not according to Dr. Doom actor Toby Kebbell, who spoke to The Daily Beast.

“I tell you, the honest truth is [Trank] did cut a great film that you’ll never see. That is a shame. A much darker version, and you’ll never see it.”

This is beginning to line up with things Trank said in the past. Trank's version was reportedly more of a 'body horror' movie focused on the terrifying effects these characters endured when they acquired their super powers. Their bodies changed forever and that can take a physical and mental toll on a person. It's starting to sound like Fox was initially interested in this darker take of Marvel's First Family but got cold feet and intervened by changing quite possibly half of the movie and its story.

With more information coming out sporadically about this film, each new piece of info makes the original cut and script sound so much more interesting than what it became on the big screen. As time goes on, the story of what really happened with Fox's FANTASTIC FOUR reboot will become more and more clear.

As of right now, it sounds like a good movie might have been there until the studio and maybe Kinberg — as he regrets some decisions made for this movie — said the film was too dark. So maybe they went in to re-write half of it and go into reshoots changing perhaps a lot more.

Who's sounding crazy now? Fox? Trank? Us for starting to believe a good movie might have been changed to become a mess of a reboot?

This story continues to fascinate and the next reveal is eagerly anticipated sometime in the future.
