THE FLASH Needs a New Director so Here's a Few Warner Bros. Should Consider

It has been a tumultuous month for the DCExtended Universe (DCEU), from the lackluster BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE critical reception to the departure of THE FLASH director Seth Grahame-Smith due to "creative differences" last week. Creative differences between directors and studios is nothing new and certainly not exclusive to Warner Bros. and DC Films, but the timing is pretty awful. The DCEU needs a big win and with SUICIDE SQUAD still a few months away, replacing Grahame-Smith swiftly should be a big priority right now. 

Luckily, there are plenty of talented directors available in Hollywood and since Grahame-Smith was hardly a household name he shouldn’t be too difficult to replace (no offense). The directing team of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (The Lego Movie) are two names that stand out immediately and since they were involved in the writing process they would be a fantastic choice. These guys are on an absolute roll of late and their slick style of seamlessly blending comedy and action would fit Barry Allen perfectly since he's brings some comedy relief. They are currently working on producing THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE along with developing Sony’s animated Spider-Man film and helming HAN SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY so their plate is full, but I would not be surprised if they are the studios' No. 1 option. These guys really understand super heroes and Warner Bros. would be extremely lucky to have them, pending schedule availability. 

THE FLASH will look to combine science with the unknown so a director like Neill Blomkamp (District 9) might also be a good fit. Blomkamp certainly isn’t the first name that comes to mind when discussing comic book movies but if DC Films is looking for something different, he just might be the guy. District 9 became a surprise hit and while he has been unable to produce that success again, THE FLASH could be an interesting vehicle to showcase his skills. 

Lastly, if DC Films wants to go with a safe and proven choice, Matthew Vaughn is their guy. The tone of movies like X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kick-Ass would fit the scarlet speedster incredibly well and Vaughn clearly knows how to make an entertaining film. He’s used to working with big studio budgets, he can handle fan pressure and always sticks to his guns. Barry Allen is often considered the heart of the Justice League and that trait needs to be front and center in this movie. Vaughn could combine heart, comedy and action to launch the DCEU to another level.
