AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 19 Review: Option Two

Author’s note: I feel it's important to mention this up front. We’re now heading into the group of episodes that take place during AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Because of that, there will be vague to minor discussion of what those mentions mean. I will be doing my best to avoid detailed spoilers unless something from the movie directly affects the episode.

This episode was pretty much a bottle episode. It dealt with one thing and one thing only… with one small exception. After Yo-yo killed Ruby, General Hale went to the Confederacy and told them SHIELD’s location. Acting on that information, the alien ship sends a group of marauders to attack SHIELD’s base.

That made up the bulk of the episode, though there were two scenes that took place outside of it. They had to do with Daisy looking for a way to keep Coulson alive. Turns out, that way has to do with a bunch of major season one and season two stuff. Apparently Garrett had been kept alive with a combination of Centipede serum and Jaiying’s DNA.

This was also the one scene where we got a small nod towards the events in Infinity War, when Tony the Candyman mentioned, “that craziness in New York.”

The rest of the episode involved SHIELD defending themselves against the cast of Mortal Kombat. I’m not even kidding, these guys looked like awful Scorpion and Sub-Zero rip offs. The idea was cool, a species that emits an EMP wherever they walk. But they just looked silly to the point that it was hard to take them seriously.

More serious was the interpersonal drama going on between team SHIELD. Everyone was turned off by Yo-yo’s action, but Yo-yo doesn’t feel bad about it. In her mind, she saved the world. At the same time, May is still pissed at Coulson. Daisy is still pissed at Fitz and Simmons. Everyone is mad at everyone it seems. At least they’re able to put aside their differences long enough to try and survive the attack on their base.

In reality, the person to save their lives wasn’t who they expected it to be. When an escort to the control room goes wrong, Talbott winds up in Simmons’ lab. He’s still going on about how he can fix everything, the guilt killing him. He spies the super soldier chamber and decides that’s the way to go. He ices Simmons and puts himself inside the chamber.

Turns out, Talbott of all people is able to handle the gravitonium. It doesn’t make him crazy. It gives him the power he needs to save the day. He arrives in all his glory, crushing the marauders and takes off into the skies with Coulson.
