AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 18 Review: All Roads Lead...

We finally got an episode where something interesting happened. The pieces are coming together.

This episode dealt with two main storylines. The first being the attack on Hale’s base and what was going on with Fitz and Simmons. The second was everything going on at home base. Both storylines had meaningful consequences and set up nicely for the coming weeks.

Starting off with the second storyline, the roasting of Deke was funny. Though as Mack and Coulson make evident, neither of them has much of a leg to stand on. Everyone seems to be having relationships issues, aside from the couple who’s known to have them. It’s worth noting that during this scene Mack was building a machine to help the Zephyr fly in space.

The other action in the Lighthouse involved General Talbott. Turns out, being imprisoned in a Hydra facility can do a number on your brain. It figures, right? That if Talbott wouldn’t help Hale that she would work to make sure he wouldn’t even know it. Even Coulson kicks himself for not thinking of it. It’s good to see this arc of the show continue the tradition of callbacks across all seasons.

Even though Talbott didn’t make it out with Robin, I have to wonder what kind of effect this will have on things. Was this always part of the future as Robin saw it? Or is there the small possibility that they’re beginning to change things?

At the Hydra base though, things were going poorly for a while. It took a little time to get going, as most of the first thirty minutes were taken up by Ruby yelling at Fitz and Simmons while they tried to fix the machine. Meanwhile you had the Von Strucker kid pouting around like a little boy. It was infuriating.

Thankfully things picked up once Hale, May, and Daisy wound up on the base. As expected, Ruby couldn’t handle the infusion of gravitonium, barely making it eight percent into the procedure before screaming in agony. It seemed to cause her even more pain than it did Kreel. The problem was that unlike Kreel, she was able to use her gravity powers. She wasn’t able to control them though, meaning every time she lashed out, something was at risk of being squished into juice.

The Strucker kid met that fate. It was a fitting end for a character that never had any merit on the show. Though it was long before Ruby followed in his footsteps. Yo-yo entered the room while Daisy was trying to calm Ruby down, and before she could do that, Yo-yo rushed in a slit the girl’s throat. It was violent and a but unexpected. I’m curious to see what the fallout of this decision is. Obviously Hale is sending the aliens after them, but will there be repercussions on SHIELD’s end as well?
