AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 13 Review: Principia

While there was a lot going on in this episode, it felt quite a bit like busy work. It was more about putting pieces on the board, than moving them into place, if you know what I mean. Not all of it was good, or even necessary, but there was a lot to love in this episode.

First and foremost, I’m glad to see that the fear dimension from last week’s “event episode” wasn’t a one and done deal. There were still consequences to deal with from the explosion. Most importunately of which was that the gravitonium grenade that Coulson used was enough to stitch reality back together, but not enough to keep it that way. So this week’s main plot was the hunt for more of the good stuff in order to shut the hole for good.

This back half of season five seems to be all about bringing the past to the present. From the gravitonium, to Robin, to people like Baron Von Strucker’s son. I can’t say I was enamored with the character back in past seasons and even here I’ve yet to understand his purpose. I don’t always remember him having a superhuman memory. Was that caused by SHIELD putting him under the machine? Why does he remember Ruby but Ruby doesn’t remember him? At first I thought these might be false memories, but General Hale seems to have a good memory of both him and his father.

While SHIELD looked for more gravitonium, the newly wedded couple was stuck at home babysitting. Simmons was to look after a recovering Yo-Yo, while Fitz was stuck with the baby of the team, Deke. I’m glad to see them taking a proper amount of time to deal with what’s happened to Yo-Yo. When Coulson lost his hand at the end of season two, it was only a matter of minutes before he was good as new again. For Yo-Yo though, this is something much more traumatic. Given what she saw in the future, I can understand her pessimism when it comes to current events and how they’ll influence the future.

Deke, on the other hand, has taken a turn for the better. Gone is the budget version of Star Lord, replaced by a child full of wonder. Also poor Jeff Ward – and Chloe Bennet I believe – were suffering from colds in this episode and you could definitely tell. In Deke’s case, it kind of added to his new child like nature. He’s way more interesting this way as opposed to a knock off of a far more interesting character. It’s good to know that the writers aren’t wasting time with having Deke discover his true parentage, even referring to Fitz as grandpa under his breath. I just wonder how long it will be until the others find out.

We learned some new details on Mack’s past as well. As the man of many faces that SHIELD was searching for happened to be Mack’s old bunkmate from the SHIELD Academy. It’s a bit of dramatic coincidence, but it seems to be servicing more than just this episode. The man had his fingers in several pies, and it appears that he’ll be useful in finding a way to fix Coulson. It also allowed everyone to make several MC Hammer references, which I couldn’t help but enjoy.

I’m glad that by the end of the episode, Yo-Yo essentially had a new pair of arms. This tells us that the future isn’t happening as predicted, because the Yo-Yo who went to fight Cassius didn’t have robot arms. Things are in flux, meaning that SHIELD has a fighting chance against the future they saw.

It’s worth noting that because Marvel moved up the release date of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, AGENTS OF SHIELD will air their 19th episode that Friday. Three more episodes will air after that one, making me wonder what the influence of this movie will be on the wider Marvel universe. Most other Marvel television projects have the benefit of still being set around the time of Avengers and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. But AGENTS OF SHIELD takes place concurrently with the movies. While Age of Ultron didn’t have world-spanning consequences, it’s hard to imagine something like Infinity War won’t.
