SDCC 2017: GOTHAM Panel Recap; New Villains and New Character Development

San Diego, Cali. -- The GOTHAM finale left the city in disaster after the effects of the virus altered the hierarchy of the criminal underworld and furthered Bruce’s development into becoming the Batman. The finale left us with many questions, so now we finally have our opportunity to seek some answers.

GOTHAM is known for its focus on the famous Batman villains, so the panel was eager to tell us more about what to expect from villains. In particular, they want to promote all the new villains. In the season finale, Ra’s al Ghul made an appearance and he made Bruce stab Alfred. Despite Bruce being brought out of his trance, Ra’s al Ghul is going to spend the majority of the season stuck on believing that Bruce is his heir.

The season finale also hints at Cyrus Gold, alternatively known as Solomon Grundy in the DC Comics Universe. Regarding him, the panel says that they tried their best to keep it close to comics. He’s dumped into the swamp and has no memory of working for Penguin or hating Nygma, which works out nicely as he becomes best friends with Nygma later.

I’m unsure of what exactly “best friends” means to Nygma anymore, since his traumatizing friendship with Penguin. I think it is far more likely that Nygma is exploiting his memory loss to add to his own criminal team, or is using him as a replacement for Penguin’s friendship. However, the Edward Nygma that comes out of the ice will be a different Edward Nygma, so all my preconceived notions could be wrong. He will still have a strong dislike for Penguin, but even then, the panel says there is always room for repair in their relationship.

Nygma and Solomon seem to be one of the many clique in the broken criminal underworld. In a surprising statement, there seems to be another addition to their team: Lee Thompkins. Once she eventually comes back to Gotham, she will return much darker, and will form up a family with Nygma and Solomon. In a way, she is taking Barbara’s place.

Meanwhile, Barbara is going to return as well. She is also going to come back different from before, predictably kinder since her hard attitude beforehand didn’t get her anywhere. She may also be more attractive to Gordon now, as the panel briefly mentions Gordon and Barbara’s canon child, and their dedication to staying as close to canon as possible. Once again, in a way, Lee and Barbara are trading places.

Barbara is also going to try to repair her relationship with Tabitha. Tabitha and Selina create their own clique in the criminal underworld. According to the panel, Selina is a key part of repairing Tabitha and Barbara’s relationship. However, that’s all the information we get about Selina, and her development as the Catwoman is not touched upon.

Although, Bruce’s development as the Batman is questioned. The panel says that he will have all the toys of the Batman without the title of the Batman. Ra’s al Ghul’s character is key in pushing him towards that character development. After all, this is said to be a Batman prequel, so they can’t get to full-blown Batman just yet. GOTHAM needs all the heroes it can get right now anyway, with so many villains constantly appearing, to even it out. Gordon and Harvey can’t handle it all on their own.

There is one new villain in the next season that wasn’t mentioned in the season finale, and that villain is Scarecrow. Besides meeting his father, Dr. Craine, in season one, we don’t know much about this guy. The panel does as much as they can to hype him up without giving much detail about him.

Overall, I am curious to see how all these characters (same old characters, but new personalities in many cases) connect with one another. Luckily, there isn’t much time left to wait for that. GOTHAM Season 4 premieres September 28.
