SUPERGIRL Season 2 Episode 18 Review: Ace Reporter

After a long hiatus, SUPERGIRL is back with another charismatic villain. Kara has been out of the journalism game too long and isn't as cheery about being unemployed when there's nothing to do as Supergirl. Damn those criminals being on their best behavior.

Luckily, Kara’s boredom doesn't last long as Lena Luthor comes over to ask for her to be her wing woman to her ex-boyfriend/partner Jack Spheer press conference for his company, Spheerical Industries. He reveals his new medical achievement Biomax Nanobots which practically stitches up his hand after he cuts it.

Kara manages to get a question in about FDA regulations despite Snapper(who is also in attendance) trying to interrupt her. After she leaves Jack and Lena to catch up she is confronted by a man who tells her he has secret information and to meet him in a parking lot. Joe Watkins, a former lab technician for Spheerical Industries, who claims the human trial tests were faked and the nanobots are dangerous. Of course, before she could grill him for information the nanobots swarm under the car and blow up Joe and his car.

Kara is convinced and tries to get James’ help into contacting the FDA but one upped by Snapper who also has a lead on a subject of the human test trials. Supergirl follows Snapper to his source and again the nanobots fly into the apartment. Supergirl tries to save them but the source seems to be disintegrated in front of them. Even when she freezes them to get Snapper to safety, they escaped eventually.

Meanwhile, Jack Spheer convinces Lena to go on a dinner date with him. This causes alarm for Kara after what has happened to the two people involved in his company so she drags Mon-El along to do some investigating. They don't get much out of Jack as he is more into smooth talking Lena, but Mon-El does get his security badge. They sneak into his building and find out that the nanotech is connected to Jack and he is controlling them. They get out before Jack/nanotechs can get them.

Kara fills Lena in but she is reluctant to believe her until she sees video proof. After being warned not to, she goes to confront Jack and learns that he isn't in control of the nanobots but his CFO Beth is. Luckily, Supergirl comes into help. Lena saves Supergirl from getting killed by the nanobites but in turns kills Jack who has bonded with them. Poor Lena can't seem to catch a break.

Kara brings Snapper her information on Jack as a peace offering to spread the truth. This earns her not only a shared byline with Snapper but also her job back at Catco. Yay!

Meanwhile, Lyra wants to partner up with Guardian and Winn to fight crime. James is against this completely but agrees to her tagging along. This isn't the best idea as she beats up a kid who broke into a convenience store.

Winn tries to let her down gently about her not joining them on their crusade but she, of course, blows up. Poor Winn is going to be a fatality in her path. Eventually her and James make up for the sake of Winn and agree to work together.

I like seeing Winn and Lyra’s relationship evolve through the show and having to learn to work with each other. Having partners along with him gives some interest to James’ Guardian storyline.

With Kara comforting Lena after her losing Jack. I've a bad feeling that this is building up to mimic the relationship between Lex and Clark and Lena will go as bad as her brother. It didn't help when Rhea (Mon-El’s mother) shows up at the end offering “support.”

I missed having Alex in this episode but next week seems to have promise as she is used as ransom against Supergirl.
