First, Collider has a report about how Brad Pitt was interested in the role of Cable in the sequel.
"Sources tell us that in casting Cable, Brad Pitt was eyed to take on the role and there was interest on both sides. As of right now he’s moved on, but since this role is very much in flux there’s the possibility that things could change. The actor may soon have his hands full producing and starring in World War Z 2 if that gets a greenlight from Paramount, but this would have been a massive casting coup for the superhero follow-up."
Pitt may not be Cable when it is officially announced, but he definitely looked good as the mutant time traveler in those concept pieces. However, actor Ryan Reynolds wants to keep the budget low for the sequel and bringing on Pitt may have increased the production budget beyond what he and Fox may have been comfortable with for the R-rated sequel.
Regardless, the thought of Pitt even considering the role and concept art being made of him as Cable means he was most definitely serious about the role some time in the recent past.
DEADPOOL 2 is currently in development and will begin filming this year for a 2018 release.
