The rumor mill has churned out its biggest rumor of the new year as there is an alleged shortlist of actor names for the role of Hal Jordan in Warner Bros. and DC Films' GREEN LANTERN CORPS movie. This is all rumor, via TheWrap, so don't that these names too seriously as there's no script for the movie or director in place to help make casting decisions.
The list includes the following actors: Tom Cruise, Joel McHale, Bradley Cooper, Armie Hammer, Jake Gyllenhaal and (via WeGotThisCovered) James Marsden. But there is one more name left and and it needs to be considered as the most unlikely name to actually land the role... again. It is Ryan Reynolds, who previously played Jordan in 2011's GREEN LANTERN.
Some of the other names are very interesting like McHale, Hammer, Marsden and Cooper but if Warner Bros. were to bring back Reynolds as Jordan then that would immediately make everything that happened in GREEN LANTERN official canon for the DC Extended Universe. Sure it wouldn't be that difficult to make the events of GREEN LANTERN official DCEU canon, but it would also bring back a tremendous amount the bad press Warner Bros. faced when GREEN LANTERN flopped at the box office — it made $219 million worldwide on a $200 million production budget. It seems highly unlikely Reynolds would want to hear any of that movie flop noise once again now that his career has been revived with DEADPOOL.
No matter who you think could make a good pick for Hal Jordan, this movie is still at the earliest stages of development and script writing with plenty of time for this so-called actor shortlist to change. And it most definitely will change over the next year.
GREEN LANTERN CORPS will co-star Hal Jordan and John Stewart and has the makings of an intergalactic buddy cop movie.
One last thing, we think John Boyega would be a great fit as John Stewart seeing as how GREEN LANTERN CORPS won't hit theaters until 2020 and he will have completed all his work as Finn in the Star Wars franchise.
