ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY may not have made as much as STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS did in its Chinese opening but it still brought in a respectable estimate of $31 million. The Force Awakens opened in China with over $53M last year and let's be honest in acknowledging that ROGUE ONE was never expected to beat those numbers.
Domestically, ROGUE ONE took in an estimated $21.9M bringing its total to $477M. This places it ever so close to FINDING DORY ($486M) in becoming the No. 1 domestic release of 2016. (Yes, even numbers in 2017 go toward it's 2016 total since that's when it was released.)
Internationally, the Star Wars spin-off has now brought in an estimated $437M, overall, bringing its worldwide total to $914M. Breaching the $1 billion barrier is right around the corner.
This officially gives Disney all of 2016's Top 5 movies in worldwide box office grosses:
- CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - $1.15B
- FINDING DORY - $1.027B
- ZOOTOPIA - $1.023B
- THE JUNGLE BOOK - $966M
- ROGUE ONE - $914M
This is a huge win for Lucasfilm and Disney showing their standalone Star Wars movie concept most definitely works. The next Star Wars standalone movie is HAN SOLO in 2018, which begins filming in the coming weeks.
