AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 4 Episode 9 Review: Broken Promises

And we’re back! After a well-deserved winter break, AGENTS OF SHIELD has returned with their second “pod” of the season. This time, the Life Model Decoys are the villains. There’s also some Inhuman funny business going on that seems like it’s tied to the Watchdogs?

I’ll have to say, that overall I wasn’t very impressed. In terms of threat level, the robots aren’t very interesting. So far, it there’s very little that says I should take them serious compared to something like Ultron. Also it really didn’t help that Mack spent the entire episode whining about robots taking over the world. He really beat that drum, to the point where it got eye-role inducing.

The reveal that Radcliffe was the one behind this all along seemed a bit out of left field as well. After all the development he went through in the past season and half, he doesn’t seem like the kind of person to kill people over getting the Darkhold. Maybe he’s so desperate to help his friends get what they or to save humanity that this all makes sense to him? I feel like we’re going to need another episode or two to understand his motivations.

The other storyline this week was the mission to rescue the Senator’s brother. Director Mace, Simmons, and Daisy, left in search of the brother while everyone else dealt with Aida. It was interesting to see Daisy and Mace work together now. It kind of feels like Daisy is being forced to stay, but it’s about time that she’s pulled back into the fold. She was never very interesting on her own.

It isn’t entirely surprising that the Senator would try to kill her own brothers, but I don’t believe she was working with the Watchdogs before. Though, I have to admit, it was weird to see Coulson start to believe that Senator Nadire was commanding the Watchdogs when he knows for a fact that their leader is the former SHIELD agent. This all happened towards the end of season three. So I’m not sure if he’s misremembering, if the writers are rewriting that idea, or both are true. We did get mention of someone called The Superior, so maybe that’s their true leader and everything will tie together.

This episode served as an okay introduction to the new storyline going forward. So far, everything seems rather tame, especially when compared to the previous storyline’s inter-dimensional beings. It’s possible that the aim of this pod is be lower scale, and that’s totally fine. I just think we need a bit more before the story hits its stride.
