AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 4 Episode 7 Review: Deals With Our Devils

Things definitely ramped up in this episode of AGENTS OF SHIELD. We might may only have a few more episodes left before the winter finale, but the pieces are starting to come together. But first, the team had to work together in order to save Coulson, Fitz and Robbie.

The question of course, was where did they go? Obviously they weren’t dead. But they had to go somewhere. Due to the nature of the season being about mystical powers and magic – for lack of a better term – it made sense that the trio wound up in an alternate dimension. Of sorts. As Fitz explained it, they were out of phase with their reality. But that wasn’t the only issue, they were sinking, as Fitz put it. Sinking into a completely different dimension. Time was of the essence.

It as a neat twist to see the same scene played out with and without the trio. It also allowed for a few new things by the crew to learn. One of which was that Director Mace was working with the senator. We also learn that this was where Simmons wound up. Apparently the good senator wanted help hatching her brother from his terra-genesis cocoon. Unlike most Inhumans, who last a few days at most in their cocoon, her brother had been inside for over seven months. So naturally, there was a lot of curiosity and importance surrounding what kind of powers he might have.

It was fun to see someone other than Robbie take the Ghost Rider out for a spin. Because while Robbie was being taken into a different dimension, the Rider was having no part of it. He’d been there before, and he was never going back. It was time to choose someone new as host.

Mack seemed like a good choice, though I’d argue that someone like May would have a much larger need for vengeance than someone like Mack. It also gave us a bit of insight into Mack’s past. We learn that while he doesn’t need revenge, he does have pain. Pain that the Rider could feed on if need be. So where that goes, I can’t say. But at least it gives Mack and Robbie a bit of common ground at least.

Lastly, the biggest revelation was that everyone – except Mace it seems – knows that Aida is an android. Her brain was the only one who could read the Darkhold and not have her mind fried in the process. It was a neat touch that the Darkhold displayed itself in binary, since it appears in the reader’s first language.

It’s also worth noting that the process of creating the portal was very similar to how the character’s in Doctor Strange create their magical spells. I won’t get into the specifics on how an android can do magic, but at this point it’s all fair game. The question of course is how it will affect Aida in the future. She’s clearly unlocked something within herself. Is she building herself a brain to become human?

As sort of a post note, I want to briefly touch on the conversation Fitz had with Coulson about the fact that he’s kind of a coward nowadays. He gave up the mantle of director and so he can’t be ordering his friends around. He’s a good leader, but he’s not their boss anymore. I’m glad that this happened because season four has had Coulson wanting to have his cake and eat it too. Except he can’t. Not anymore. So I’m glad whenever Coulson gets called on his nonsense.
