BLACK PANTHER Screenwriter Says it Will Pick Up After the Events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

One of the (many) shining moments in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR was the introduction of actor Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, the Black Panther. By the end of the movie, T'Challa is no longer out for revenge for the death of his father, T'Chaka, and he begins to accept his new role as the leader of the nation Wakanda. As well as having the responsibility of the Black Panther title.

Right now, BLACK PANTHER is in development to prepare for filming, which begins in early 2017, with director Ryan Coogler and screenwriter Joe Robert Cole are penning its script. SlashFilm caught up with Cole, who shared some interesting bits of info about BLACK PANTHER.

“...Our standalone movie will begin shortly after Civil War ends. So we’ll be able to see him mourning and him starting to take command as king of his own nation. Lots of things are going to occur within regards to that. The country will be under threat from inside and out so we’ll learn what Wakanda is, that nation, as the most technologically advanced nation on the planet. Also, as Wakanda’s rise to prominence happens, it will affect the MCU moving forward which is really exciting.”

Unfortunately, Cole did not give any hints as to if Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, and/or Captain America would make an appearance in BLACK PANTHER — seeing as how Bucky is currently under the care of Wakandan scientists to remove the Hydra brainwashing from inside his head. But it's still safe to assume both might have small roles in BLACK PANTHER until further notice. Especially since Cole says BLACK PANTHER will pick up shortly after the events of Civil War.
