X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Projecting an $85 Million Domestic Opening Weekend

Despite having mixed reviews to the tune of a 53-percent score on RottenTomatoes right now, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is projecting an $85 million domestic opening weekend. A solid debut but not as good as its predecessor's opening. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST landed a $110M domestic opening two years ago and the drop-off could be due to three things.

The first reason being that X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is opening against ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS as well as the $1 billion worldwide blockbuster CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, which still bringing in big box office bucks. The second possible reason for the opening weekend decline might be due to those mixed reviews. And finally, this Memorial Day weekend is looking at having stellar weather conditions across the U.S. which means many may choose to be outside instead of going to the theater to enjoy the weather.

With a reported production budget at $178M, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE has already brought in over $102M overseas as it opened in many International markets and it is off to a good start. However, there is no certainty that Apocalypse will top Days of Future Past's total box office gross of $747M worldwide.
