After bringing in a promising estimate of $8.2 million in its Thursday night domestic screenings — which beat X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and its Thursday night opening by $100,000 — X-MEN: APOCALYPSE opened on Friday to softer than expected box office grosses.
According to BoxOfficeMojo, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE brought in an estimated $26.4 million combined on Thursday and Friday. This is $9.1 million less than the $35.5M that X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST took in on its domestic Thursday and Friday opening. For comparison purposes, DEADPOOL brought in $47.3M in its combined Thursday and Friday tally earlier this year.
Not a good sign and perhaps an inditement that the new X-Men movie's current 48-percent score on RottenTomatoes was a sign of a possible struggle to meet its projected $85-plus million domestic opening weekend number. In its 3-day opening weekend, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST brought in $90M and when you add the Memorial Day holiday, its extended weekend total it took in a total of $110M.
X-MEN: APOCALYPSE has a lot of work today and the remainder of this extended weekend so it can meet the initial prediction of $85M. As of now, it's trending for a low $80M opening after Thursday and Friday estimates. Make no mistake, an approximate $80 million opening 3-day weekend is still a solid earning, nevertheless. Not to mention that X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is reportedly having strong returns in the International market this weekend, too.
Tomorrow, Sunday, The Daily SuperHero will have another box office report on X-MEN: APOCALYPSE as its promising start on Thursday, followed by a lower than expected Friday has its opening performance as the most intriguing and developing story of the weekend.
