It was only a matter of time until something like this happened on national television as Stephen Colbert has called out Marvel for their lack of female villains in response to the report last week. IRON MAN 3 director Shane Black stated that Marvel corporate in New York told him to make a change in his script so the main villain, which was originally female, needed to be male for toys sales.
This was not a result of any doing from Marvel Studios' braintrust and this occurred way before the studio was moved out from under the control of Marvel's New York offices and to under the supervision of Walt Disney Studios head Alan Horn, last fall.
Black originally had the IRON MAN 3 main villain reveal to be female and he was forced to change it per the excuse that the company would sell more toys of a male villain instead of a female villain. However, only one figure was actually made of Aldrich Killian and that was in one LEGO set, so this forced change really had deeper implications than just its toy sales excuse.

It's long overdue to have a female as a main villain in a Marvel Studios movie and it looks like that will finally happen as Cate Blanchett is rumored to be the main baddie in THOR: RAGNAROK.
