IRON MAN Being in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is Partly Due to Great On-Screen Chemistry

***This post contains SPOILERS for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.***

Actor Robert Downey Jr. has been fully embracing his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in recent years. At one point it seemed like he was ready to call it quits after IRON MAN 3 because his last commitment to his Marvel Studios contract was a third Avengers movie. Well, that Avengers film turned into a 2-part event that is currently AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR — which will get retitled according to directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

After IRON MAN 3, Downey signed on for a fourth Avengers movie as well as to co-star in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Most of you should have already seen it this weekend and saw first-hand that it was (debatably) Downey's best performance as Tony Stark and Iron Man since his first turn in 2008's IRON MAN.

With AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR still not coming until May 2018, Downey has added another appearance to his already impressive seven MCU movie appearances. Please note: He only had a cameo in THE INCREDIBLE HULK but we're still counting that.

Tony Stark and Iron Man will return in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and according to the Russos, via Entertainment Weekly, Downey and Peter Parker / Spidey actor Tom Holland really hit it off. And you could tell in their scenes together CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.

“The Spider-Man scene between he and Tom Holland is really beautifully written, this scene in his bedroom. And as we were rehearsing the scene, there was a certain proprietary energy to [Downey], and he started to take over the blocking in the scene,” Joe said. “I remember Anthony and I kind of looked at each other and just stepped back and watched Robert in essence create…”
“Help Tom,” Anthony said. “Pushing him.”
“Help Tom create a very star-making performance in that scene just by working through the logic with him, moving him around the room,” Joe added. “It was a very small set. And it was masterful. It was literally like, this is Downey at the true essence of what he is — a guy who literally understands exactly how to play to a camera.”
“And he also understood what that moment was and how important that moment was to both for the movie, for the character, and for Tom Holland,” Anthony said.

Chemistry between actors can be tough to come by, especially when you're acting opposite of Downey. But, in Civil War, Holland was perfect in his performance and he is quickly trending to be the definitive big screen Spider-Man that fans have been waiting for.

After Downey's great performance as Stark in Civil War, bringing in more Stark and Iron Man is definitely not a bad thing.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING begins filming this summer and releases on July 7, 2017.
