Seems like Warner Bros. is anticipating lightning in a bottle when Harley Quinn makes her live action big screen debut in this summer's SUICIDE SQUAD. The most talked about character in SUICIDE SQUAD on social media has easily been Margot Robbie's Harley and that level of hype has led to Warner Bros. green light a Harley Quinn spin-off movie that has previously been secretively being developed by Robbie and an undisclosed writer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter this is not just a Harley Quinn solo movie, too.
THR reports:
"Sources say that Robbie was the impetus for the project, adding that when she got the part for the movie, she dove deep into the comics to learn as much as possible about the character. In the process, she fell for DC’s female characters. She brought on the writer to help develop the project and brought it to Warners, which snapped it up.
"But in an interesting twist, the project is not a Quinn solo movie. Rather, it would focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains. Details are being closely guarded but names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have surfaced, although in what capacity, it’s not clear. Warner Bros. isn’t commenting."
This untitled Harley Quinn spin-off movie joins Ben Affleck's BATMAN movie as two films that are most definitely in development right now but do not have a release date set (as of the publishing of this post). Also, it's interesting how this spin-off reveal is happening right after Affleck was promoted by Warner Bros. to provide his creative influence to the DC Extended Universe.
Warner Bros. currently has two release dates set for untitled DC movies on October 5, 2018 and on November 1, 2019. SUICIDE SQUAD releases on August 5.
