Disney Surrenders to the Video Game Business as Infinity is Canceled and Self-Publishing Stops

The Walt Disney Company isn't great at everything they do as they are canceling their Disney Infinity video game and they will no longer be self-publishing their own video games. The really sad part of this news is that Disney will be cutting a reported 300 jobs in this move.

Here is Disney's statement, via IGN:

"After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model. This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model. This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche, our internal studio that developed the game. This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans."

This means no more Disney Infinity adventures for the youngest Marvel and Star Wars fans, as well as fans of Disney's other characters who were included in the game. The news might come as a surprise to some but those who are familiar with Disney's struggles in the video game biz shouldn't be surprised by this at all.

Moving forward, Disney will be licensing out all video game needs to developers / publishers similar to what they've done by licensing Star Wars games with EA Games. Disney will not be at E3 next month unless it's for games previously licensed out to developers and/or publishers.
