Going all the way back to August 2013, there's been rumors how there could be an OBI-WAN KENOBI: A STAR WARS STORY spin-off movie in-the-works with actor Ewan McGregor returning to reprise is role from the Prequel Trilogy. In summer of last year, McGregor said he would love to return to the role, too. Even as recent as this past February there's been rumors circulating that McGregor could be in talks to return as Kenobi.
Unfortunately for the man who was by far the best part of the prequels, nothing has come up yet in terms of Lucasfilm actually hinting at or confirming a standalone Kenobi movie. Which is a damn shame because the fans want it and McGregor really wants it to happen.
In fact, the topic was brought up to McGregor in a new interview with Collider. The actor spoke a lot about his wanting to return.
"I’d very much like to do one too. I think the story between Episode III and Episode IV, I think there’s a story there. I think that’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, if there is one. The one that bridges my Obi-Wan Kenobi and Alec’s Obi-Wan Kenobi because there’s a — I don’t know how long he’s in the desert there, but it’s got to be twenty or thirty years.
"To play Obi-Wan Kenobi again would be something I would love to do in one of the spinoff movies. If that were to happen in one of their trilogies, I would be up for that, but I don’t know how that would happen."
But here's the kicker, when pressed with the question of if he's met with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about a return to the role, he was less than forthcoming about it.
"I’m not sure I’m at liberty to say, really, but I’m very interested in doing that. That would be great. Maybe there’s even a trilogy! (laughs)"
The last laugh part was more of an optimistic joke than anything he knows for sure. However, this is Star Wars and Lucasfilm we are talking about who have some of the highest level of security and secrecy in the film business... so anything is possible.
