Drew Goddard Says SINISTER SIX Would Have Been a Standalone SPIDER-MAN Movie and Could Still Happen

In 2014, writer and director Drew Goddard was creating, developing and writing the first episodes of Netflix's DAREDEVIL series when he was offered his dream movie project. Sony contacted Goddard about developing the Spider-Man spin-off movie, SINISTER SIX. Sony slated a release for December 2016 but then Sony saw the box office performance of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 as being not good enough and everything changed for Sony and its Spidey franchise.

Sony and Marvel Studios then partnered up for all future SPIDER-MAN movies to be brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe causing all other Spidey movie universe plans at Sony to end. This included SINISTER SIX which had significant development time and potentially there is a script draft sitting somewhere on Goddard's computer or a flash drive.

But SINISTER SIX may not be completely scrapped as Goddard spoke with io9 and said his SINISTER SIX movie was as much of a standalone movie as it was a Spider-Man movie.

“My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.
“It was a Spider-Man movie. It was the giant, epic Spider-Man movie of my dreams.”

If you're not familiar with what a 'summer annual' is it was a double-sized comic book full of adventures that stood on their own and didn't need to be connected with a larger on-going story arc. With so many super hero movie universes now being closely connected with each other, that could have made an interesting addition to the genre.

Goddard seemingly hints SINISTER SIX could still happen but now that Marvel Studios is in control of the story for Sony's Spider-Man franchise any future SINISTER SIX movie plans are now in the hands of the producing brain trust at Marvel Studios. Or parts of Goddard's script could be adapted into a future MCU SPIDER-MAN movie.
