DOCTOR STRANGE: Tilda Swinton Reportedly in Negotiations to be the Ancient One

Marvel Studios is in the final development and pre-production stages for DOCTOR STRANGE because full production and principle photography begins in November. Already cast in the title role is Benedict Cumberbatch, but he is the only role officially announced. More casting announcements are coming soon than later.

Source of The Hollywood Reporter tell the news outlet that actor Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer, Constantine) is in negotiations for the role of Dr. Stephen Strange's teacher and mentor, the Ancient One. Previously, actors Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe were rumored to be up for the role of the Ancient One but they seem to be out of the mix as Swinton is now in talks for it.

Even though DOCTOR STRANGE will not be your typical origin story movie (thank goodness!) it will most likely tell his origin but quickly as a montage, a la THE INCREDIBLE HULK opening, or via flashback(s) — similar to how ANT-MAN will tell the origin for Hank Pym.

Marvel Studios has been aware for the need of more diversity in the super hero movie genre and the addition of Swinton would be another positive step in that direction.

Per Marvel: "DOCTOR STRANGE will follow the story of neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions."
