GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Could Have More to do With Setting up CAPTAIN MARVEL Than AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

When Marvel set out to make Guardians of the Galaxy, the plan was to open the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to its space and cosmic side. The first part of that plan was a huge success since Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel Studios' No. 3 worldwide hit in tickets sales after The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

The next 'phase' of Marvel's cosmic universe is now taking shape as writer/director James Gunn is working on Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The sequel will continue to tell the stories of Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot but it will also set up more things to come in Marvel's cosmic universe.

While some may think Guardians 2 could help set up Avengers: Infinity War Part I and II, Gunn says it is less important to future Avengers movies and more important to expanding all-things cosmic and space.

"We’re not subservient to the Avengers. 'Guardians 2' is not a movie that’s made to move toward 'Infinity War,'" Gunn told MTV. "It’s something that’s made to move toward future cosmic movies..."

With that being said it can be assumed Guardians 2 may help set up another future Marvel Studios Phase 3 movie like Captain Marvel, because in the comics the character is very cosmic in its nature and origin story. Of course that is just my educated guess but if the sequel isn't helping to set up Avengers: Infinity War then the next likely guess is to somehow help set up Captain Marvel. (Or maybe a future Nova movie.)

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 releases in theaters on May 5, 2017.
