Editorial: How AGENT CARTER Could Set Up AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and Lead to Who is the True Creator of ULTRON

The first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron has been out for a few days now. If you're like me, you've watched it at least a dozen times already and you've thinking about 'the hows,' 'the whats,' and 'the whys' about the sequel.

While some websites will highlight the obvious in the trailer and post 'what you missed' articles across the web, The Daily SuperHero will not because I know Marvel fans don't miss much. Instead, I've focused on digging deeper into the possible relationship between Avengers: Age of Ultron and ABC's new television series Agent Carter, which airs early 2015.

The potential connection between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Agent Carter is a simple one... the path to the birth of Ultron could start decades before Ultron finally emerges in front of the team, as seen in the trailer. Let me take you on this trip of speculation and theory.

Actor Dominic Cooper is already been confirmed to be reprising his role as a young Howard Stark in Agent Carter. Being the founder of the Strategic Scientific Reserve — a.k.a SSR and the first incarnation of SHIELD before it was called SHIELD — the young Stark is no different than his son Tony in the modern day Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both father and son are inventors and, as we've seen in Iron Man 2, Howard created and developed some ideas where the technology of his era was not up to par as it is for Tony.

With this in mind, part of Marvel's official synopsis for Avengers: Age of Ultron says, "When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry..." What is known about Age of Ultron is that Tony creates Ultron, however, my theory uses this pull quote from the sequel's synopsis and implies that Howard may have actually taken the first steps toward creating Ultron but the tech was not where he needed it to be.

Cue Tony jumpstarting the "dormant peacekeeping program" which might have been an idea originally created by his father. So while Tony uses modern tech to initiate the peacekeeping program, it was Howard's initial idea for the program that spawned a self aware artificial intelligence that is Ultron. Hence, Agent Carter could be setting up Avengers: Age of Ultron by mentioning or showing how Howard was the person who had the idea first and that his son finished, which became Ultron.

To quickly recap this theory in case you got lost in my explanation. Howard Stark is the true creator of Ultron but he needed the help of his son Tony and the tech of the modern day to finally make Howard's original idea become a reality... and a nightmare.

It's all just my theory but it would match Marvel's ongoing canon tagline for their Marvel Cinematic Universe... "It's all connected."

Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1, 2015.
