Benedict Cumberbatch Saying Original Cast is Returning For STAR WARS Could be a Telling Sign About Him Too

Is there any one actor who is making more rumor headlines in Hollywood than Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch right now? The rising star's name has been in rumor circles and speculation debates for Marvel's Doctor Strange and Star Wars Episode VII and it really doesn't get any bigger than to be rumored to be attached to either of those franchises.

The most recent rumor has Cumberbatch possibly in talks to be in the new Star Wars trilogy. But that could mostly be theorists connecting the dots between the actor and director J.J. Abrams since both worked together on the latest Star Trek.

Cumberbatch has been at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend and despite the actor denying everything regarding the next Star Wars movie, it appears he already knows that some of the original Star Wars cast has been tapped to return. (Remember, at the time of this column being published, nothing has been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm saying any of the original cast is returning.)

"No matter what anyone said or is talking about, this is the simple truth: JJ and I have worked together before, I’d love to work together again,” Cumberbatch said, per Access Hollywood. “There’s been no offer made and that’s that—and that is that. And that’s not why I parted company from Crimson Peak. That was… completely different reasons, not because I was jumping for another job. I genuinely don’t know; everyone else seems to know. I get texts and e-mails and congratulations and I go, ‘Well, what do you know that I don’t? Because I know the boss and he hasn’t rung.’ Nothing’s been cast in that film yet apart from, as we know, the return players from the original films.”

He said something similar to The Telegraph while at the festival.

"Of course I’d love to do Star Wars and work with J.J. Abrams again because we had such a good time on Star Trek, but nobody has been cast and there are no offers out to anyone apart from the regulars who are returning. So that’s that rumor quashed.” 

Then, with a grin, Cumberbatch said regarding the Star Wars casting rumors:

“We’ll have to wait and see."

The biggest red flag here is that Cumberbatch suddenly left writer/director Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak last week right around the time the Star Wars rumor started, regardless of the fact he is quoted as saying his departure is unrelated. He also said he just debunked the rumor but having knowledge of the original cast returning could be a telling sign... maybe. This could show Cumberbatch does have some knowledge of what is happening with Star Wars and he has indeed been talking with Abrams, to some extent, about the new trilogy. 

Does this mean casting talks have also occurred with Abrams to be in Star Wars Episode VII? No one really knows for sure except for probably a handful of people on this planet right now but you can bet money on the fact these Cumberbatch rumors are not going away anytime soon.
