THE WOLVERINE is a Solo Movie Which Could Mean Wolverine is Not the Time Traveler in X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Will he or won't he travel through time? This is the question game The Daily SuperHero has been playing in order to try to figure out if Wolverine will be the time traveler in X-Men Days of Future Past. Set photos and a video have all led to theories saying he might be but according to what is being said about The Wolverine, it sounds like Logan might not be going back to the 1970s.

Initially, the theory was that The Wolverine would end as a tease to somehow lead into the time traveling plot lines in X-Men Days of Future Past. Now according to director James Mangold, in an interview with SFX (via MTV Splash Page), The Wolverine is more standalone than previously thought.

"['X-Men' director] Bryan [Singer] and I have talked and he's seen what we've done," says Mangold. "Clearly the reality is that we are all trying to work together and make things groove together. But the trick is we were making our movie before Bryan came on and before I knew what they were up to in that film. Our agenda was always our agenda and our movie stands alone, so the journey we take Logan on in 'The Wolverine,' we bring to a close."

Sounds like Mangold and company were trying to close the chapter on Wolverine solo movies, which makes some sense since it is not known if actor Hugh Jackman will continue the role, that brought him to the mainstream, after X-Men Days of Future Past. Yes, this is a sad thought because—like replacing Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man—some re-castings seem impossible when an actor portrays the role so well.

This does sound like Wolverine will not be the time traveler though. As Mangold says in the quote, he brings things to a close in The Wolverine. However, there's the chance that Wolverine will still have a leading, active role in X-Men Days of Future Past since he was in a cameo in X-Men First Class and the new film could be his introduction to the X-Men team in the 70s timeline.

With time travel and two different time lines to work off of, director Bryan Singer really has his work cut out for him. It's virtually impossible to know how any puzzle pieces fit together without seeing the puzzle pieces first. So stay tuned.

X-Men Days of Future Past will release in theaters on May 23, 2014.
