Let's start with the facts about the next movie. Bay is directing Transformers 4 and has his leading actor, in Mark Walhberg. Also, revealed is that Paramount is looking for a female actor to play Walhberg's daughter and a male actor to play her boyfriend. And, by the way, her boyfriend is a race car driver (lame!).
Bay may have said that Transformers 4 is the last one in the franchise he will direct but two things say otherwise. The first is the fact he said Transformers: Dark of the Moon was his final movie and he came back. Second, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that all actors are required to sign a three-picture deal.
Maybe Bay will stick to his word this time around. But the cat is out of the bag that there will be yet another trilogy. Odds are—since Transformers 4 is only taking place about 4-5 years after the last one—that he will probably direct the other two sequels too.
What director wants to come into Bay's Transformers movie universe and direct the rest of a trilogy that Bay started anyway? (Do you hear the crickets?)
After talking to several mid-30s hardcore Transformers fans, who grew up with it in the 80s, the common theme is that they all just don't care about Bay's Transformers ... at all. Sad but true. However, the fourth movie will make a ton of money in the box office and with merchandising and no one at Paramount or Hasbro will care about the older fans who grew up with Transformers and helped make it into what it is today.
Maybe Disney should do everyone a favor and buy out Hasbro to save the classic 80s franchises like Transformers (and G.I. Joe) since Disney seriously can't do worse than what has already been done on the big screen for both.
