According to Deadline, there is already a short list of actors Marvel Studios has targeted to play the lead role of Star-Lord. This list includes: James Marsden (Cyclops in the X-Men movies), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Joel Edgerton (Warrior), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Lee Pace (The Hobbit), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) and Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom).

In the comics, Star-Lord (a.k.a. Peter Quill) is a human who is approached by an alien and offered the mantle of Star-Lord, which is pretty much like being an interplanetary police officer. While wearing a special suit, Star-Lord has powers like super-strength, flight, enhanced marksmanship and wields elemental guns.
