Once again, we are heading back into the world of actor Chris Hemsworth's Thor, who has been revitalized by Waititi and the Russo Brothers in recent films THOR: RAGNAROK, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and AVENGERS: ENDGAME.
Right off the bat, in a cold open, we get actor Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher and his quick and succinct origin story as to why he has become a villain of this film. Once we quickly get through this you are treated to the Marvel Studios logo and we jump right into Korg (voiced by Waititi) telling us the story of Thor and what he's been up to since we last saw him fly off with the Guardians of the Galaxy after the events of Endgame. It's more or less a quick montage of Thor getting back into superhero shape and fighting alongside of the Guardians. However, he's not really fighting as he is waiting for the Guardians to tell him they need his help during battle. That's when Thor jumps into action and we see a supercharged and overpowered Thor like you've never seen him before.
To put it plain and simple, Thor is a top tier badass who is a one-man calvary.
After fighting with the Guardians and claiming victory in a battle, Thor and the team look for their next mission to help others when a distress call is found citing the God Butcher is coming. Thor's eyes light up and he says his goodbyes to the Guardians and takes off on his own voyage with Korg.
This is more of less most of what has been shown in the teasers and trailers that have released so far, but I've left out a lot of information to not spoil your viewing experience. So now we get into the mostly vague part of this review in order to keep all the surprises a secret until you see them for yourself.
Hemsworth is more of his lovable self in this revitalized version of Thor. You can tell he really loves this role and has so much fun with it. But this movie isn't only about him, it is also about the return of actress Natalie Portman who has already been revealed to be wielding Thor's previously destroyed hammer, Mjolnir.
Portman returns are Jane Foster, who has become a refreshingly fun character now that she is The Mighty Thor. Her origin story in becoming worthy is one that is told in this movie, but it is also told in a way where it does not bog down the film with another origin tale. Just as I said how Hemsworth is having a blast as Thor, Portman is too having so much fun as The Might Thor. She is just as much of a badass as Thor is to the point where Thor is legitimately shocked at the reveal, as well as shocked at the fact Mjolnir is back. How all this unfolds is well told and does not drag the movie's fast pace down at all. In fact, it almost moves the movie faster toward the end credits.
The pace of the film is of course fast and with a run time just under two hours, it feels almost like the movie could have tacked on some more time to show both Thors having fun fighting alongside of each other. But don't let this statement make you believe the movie is too short. It is not. It fits so much stuff into it that it doesn't feel over-packed nor does it feel like you're getting shorted by the shorter runtime.
You would think the real scene stealer here is The Mighty Thor, but it really is Bale's Gorr. His motivations are very clear, he wants all Gods dead, hence being called the God Butcher. He's powerful wielding the Necrosword. In the comics, Gorr had the All-Black which was a sword created by Knull and imbued with symbiote powers. This is a big change from the comics but one that was needed as there is no place for symbiotes in this particular story.
Gorr is creepy... and I mean really creepy at times. The way he moves and attacks and can disappear and reappear are chilling. Kind of like if your own shadow was about to attack you level of creepiness.
The story itself is lovely and very much a Waititi movie with humor mixed in. But it's fun humor, not humor just to have humor in this film. In fact, I was say that THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER is part romantic comedy, too.
The film is solid all-around, although it gets a little long-winded at the end in order to wrap up story lines, but that doesn't really matter is since gives a lot of closure. But not for Hemsworth, who is still living it up and embracing his long term role as the God of Thunder and he will most definitely be back for more after this ending and especially the first credits scene.
And the second credits scene will give many some real feels.
