SUPERGIRL Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Stranger Beside Me

After that explosive premiere, we slide into a classic episode beginning Supergirl saving the citizens of National City. Supergirl saves a truck from slamming into a van with a family because the van swerved to avoid a citizen who was texting and walking. This is a piece of cake for Kara. What she is really mad about is seeing a commercial for Obsidian North on the Jumbotron instead of the story about an upcoming special election.

While discussing this with James he oh so smoothly decides to mention that there are financial backers who’d like him to run for senator and also the Smithsonian wants him for a media director. Seems like a lot of great opportunists for a guy who used to just be a photographer and has no idea about politics.

James and Kara drop coffee off at J’onn’s office but instead see him unconscious on the floor. They assemble Alex and Brainy to check him out while J'onn explains what happened. He knows that the Green Martian he fought is his brother because due to an ancient curse placed on Green Martians, they’re left in tremendous pain if they ever try to fight their own brother. That’s a rather complex way of getting to the truth.

Brainy knows of a way to cure J’onn’s pain by using Q waves which is what Kelly has been using at Obsidian North so that’s James’s job while Alex and Brainy search for the Green Martian.

Lena has been obsessed with bettering humanity. She wants to us she Obsidian North lenses use them to create a link inside human and aliens’ brains to make sure they don’t do anything bad. She calls her project Non Nocere. Do no harm. Of course, a moment later we see she is the one who knocked out Eve and brought her to the building as a test subject. So much for do no harm. Eve tries to get her to let her go by explaining she was forced to betray her by others. Lena doesn’t believe her and instead keeps her imprisoned.

Kara hurries to work after a frantic call from Nia to find Andrea pushing her Obsidian North technology at their meeting. She also insists that Kara write a story about who was wearing what at her Pulitzer Prize ceremony. She lets Kara do the story she wants but insists she get her story first. This woman is all about the click-bait.

Kelly works to cure J’onn’s but it just makes the pain worse. Kelly sees that some of his memories seem to be fractured or broken. She helps J’onn’s by going into a weird trance to help him access and fix these memories. They find the memories and learn someone wiped them. J’onn’s experiences a horrible pain which mimics his brothers. This helps Alex and Brainy locate him.

Kara is at work looking for pictures for her article. While the new guy, William, seems to have found something incriminating for Andrea. He thinks Kara saw it as well so he calls someone to follow her when she has to leave to assist Alex. Supergirl, Brainy and Alex track J’onn’s brother to a sewer but before they can find him they’re attacked by a White Martian. William, who followed his lead, goes down the sewer as well is saved my Supergirl who stops the White Martian from attacking him. At the same time, Kelly is helping J’onn’s recreate his wiped memories. He realizes that his brother betrayed him and his family by siding with the White Martians. His memory is now whole and his pain is gone. But his brother’s pain is gone as well. Yep. Should’ve waited on that one. J’onn’s brother escapes with the White Martian’s body.

Kara gets back to Catco and is sentenced to working as a copy editor since she didn’t turn in her assignment on time. To add to that, William decided to write it instead. Yeah this guy just got added to her crap list.

Lena is caught off guard by Andrea who learns that Lena destroyed her Obsidian lenses in an attempt to use them herself. Andrea take her other lenses and threatens to make her a story if she messes with her again. Seems like someone has met her match.

While J’onn and Kara stay in for the night, Alex goes home and finds who she thinks is Kelly, but it’s the Green Martian in disguise who followed her. Luckily Alex realizes it isn’t Kelly and activated the Supergirl beacon. Supergirl gets there and sees Alex but realizes almost immediately that is J’onn’s brother. They fight and it gets taken to the streets. The others arrive. Kelly goes to get Alex out of the building while James and J’onn do damage control.

Supergirl and J’onn’s brother takes their fight to the skies and the Martian lands on the room where Kelly and Alex are trying to escape. The Martian transforms into Kelly. In the commotion, Alex can’t tell who's who. She takes a chance and shoots the right one but Kelly is pushed off the room by the Green Martian. Supergirl saves her in time but the Martian is gone. With J’onn’s brother in the wind there’s not much for team supergirl to do but get back to business. Kara goes to the office to work on her copy editor homework. Kelly and Alex settle in and James contemplates his future.

Lena has officially gone too far. Eve is released and she believes that Lena has finally believed her. However, she has been holding her prisoner because she wanted to map her brain where honestly and loyalty lie so she could input her AI Hope into her. Eve is stunned and is powerless when Hope invades her mind.

J’onn’s brother was having a bit of a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde moment. He eavesdropped on Kelly’s conversations with J’onn about how using too much Q waves could reset his brain. That’s exactly what he wants to do if it gets him his powers back. This guy isn’t going to be going anywhere anytime soon.

In a small glimpse, we discussed that William is not as much as a jerk as he appears. He seemed to be actually volunteering at a soup kitchen. Weird. More and more layers to this guy.

Alex is starting to realize that there is a lot she doesn’t know about Kelly despite their accelerated relationship. After the whole twin situation, Alex is feeling more comfortable with their relationship.

While on the flip side, Brainy is going a bit overboard with him and Nia by sending her enough Bento Boxes and Pizzas for lunch that could feed an army. Despite her airing her concerns about him going overboard, he still doesn’t seem to get it. Seems like they’re biting a rough patch early in their relationship.

Lena is tumbling faster and faster into the dark side. It seems that either Andrea will be joining her and Andrea will be her first enemy. Either way, it seems to be the biggest villain Supergirl will face with be another Luthor.
