Idris Elba Won't be Deadshot in THE SUICIDE SQUAD as He Will be a New Character

Last month word hit that actor Idris Elba would be replacing Will Smith as Deadshot in James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD movie. A month later and that has become less-than-accurate.

According to Variety, Elba will in fact star in the movie but he won't be Deadshot as he will be a new character.

"The [production] team also did not want to feel as if it was disrespecting Smith, who helped bring this character to life for the first time, by replacing him with Elba. While many believe chances are still slim for a future return, the decision keeps the door open for Smith to possibly come back in future films, since his original reason for leaving had to do with scheduling and not creative differences."

So Elba is still in, but not as Deadshot, while Smith has the opportunity to return to the role of Deadshot down the road. Sounds like a win-win. Now the question remains of who Elba will be portraying in Gunn's 'soft reboot.'

THE SUICIDE SQUAD releases on August 6, 2021.
