Standalone JOKER Origin Movie Officially Green Lit With Joaquin Phoenix Set to Star

Director and co-writer Todd Phillips' JOKER origin movie is officially a go as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the Warner Bros. standalone film will begin filming in September. Actor Joaquin Phoenix has officially signed on to play the Clown Prince and this film will not be a part of the DC Extended Universe.

The studio has said this movie project is an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale."

The reported budget for this movie will be very small when you compare it to how big MCU and DCEU film budgets are over $100-plus million. THR says this JOKER movie will have a modest budget in the $55 million range.

No release date has been set, but the report claims if all goes well it could release as early as late 2019.
