This is How Marvel Studios' Phase 4 Seems to be Taking Shape Right Now

Fans of Marvel Studios are trying to figure out what will happen after the events of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR when that story concludes in next summer's AVENGERS 4. But after that the studio is being very quiet on all fronts as they do not want to reveal the title of AVENGERS 4 until closer to the end of this year and they are focused on the release of ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (read my spoiler-free review here) next weekend here in the U.S. as then the March release of CAPTAIN MARVEL.

During press tours for ANT-MAN AND THE WASP this week, studio head Kevin Feige has been teasing what is coming for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a post- AVENGERS 4 world.

We know SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is coming just about two month after the events of AVENGERS 4 conclude as sort of an epilogue to the events in Phase 3 next summer and potentially setting up what's to come in Phase 4. Also, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 is said to be the next film following Far From Home as what is rumored to be the actual start of Phase 4 with a release date rumored to be May 1, 2020.

One of the biggest teases is how THE ETERNALS movie is being developed which will drastically expand the cosmic side of the MCU. Also, the studio has been aggressively developing a standalone BLACK WIDOW film starring actress Scarlett Johansson.

After the "soft reboot" of Thor in THOR: RAGNAROK, actor Chris Helmsworth seem rejuvenated in his commitment to the role and he has hinted that he could be ready to re-up his movie contract with Marvel Studios since it expires with AVENGERS 4. And let's not forget BLACK PANTHER 2 is most definitely in early stages of development right now.

More recently, per CinemaBlend, Feige has confirmed development is definitely taking place for DOCTOR STRANGE 2, which will see actor Benedict Cumberbatch return in the title role as well as director Scott Derrickson most likely returning to helm the sequel to his original film, too.

So we know as fact that SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 are two films that are closer to production start dates than any other movies at the moment. While BLACK WIDOW, BLACK PANTHER 2, THE ETERNALS, and DOCTOR STRANGE 2 are all at some level of development and inching toward principle photography in the coming year or two.

There have been several of other rumor reports about other new film properties, but the only one that sounds the most plausible right now is THE ETERNALS. Other recent teases, from various reports, sound more like hopeful dreams to be films way into the future, with POWER PACK and YOUNG AVENGERS.

You and I both know there will definitely be some new franchise surprises coming when Phase 4 is officially announced. Sure there will probably be a CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 and perhaps a third ANT-MAN AND THE WASP movie, but let's get CAPTAIN MARVEL and ANT-MAN AND THE WASP released first before we step into speculation for those franchises.

Finally, the studio will not have a big Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con International 2018 next month but there have been some teases by Feige on how Marvel Studios may have a press event this fall and the most likely reason is to announce their full Phase 4 slate of films coming in 2020 and beyond. Back in October 2014, the studio held a press event to announce Phase 3 and it seems that it will happen again for Phase 4.
