Soul Stone Theory in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Confirmed

If you haven't seen AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR yet, please stop reading because SPOILERS are incoming below. Get out to the theater right now, see it, and then come back to this post.

If you have seen it, please proceed.

At the end of Infinity War, Thanos finally snaps his fingers after Thor slammed the axe portion of his new hammer/axe, called Stormbreaker, into Thanos' chest. Unfortunately, Thanos tells Thor he should have aimed for his head and he snaps his fingers with the Infinity Gauntlet and all six Infinity Stones to reduce half of the universe's population to ash.

After he snaps his fingers, Thanos is seen talking to a young version of Gamora in a place with an orange hue throughout. Many fans (myself included) assumed that was Gamora's soul now stuck inside of the Soul Stone after Thanos sacrificed her to acquire the Soul Stone. Being stuck inside of the Soul Stone is similar to the Marvel Comics version which is called the Soul Gem and its properties.

Director Joe Russo has confirmed this is true while speaking at his high school alma mater. Here's what he said, per Reddit via MCU Exchange (edited for clarity and reading flow):

"Joe Russo: Yeah it’s — it’s implied... it’s the Soul Stone. It’s all orange around, then he’s inside the Soul Stone with the amount of power that it took to snap his fingers. [Thanos] has this out of body experience... When [Thanos] goes inside the Soul Stone he has this kind of conversation with the younger version of Gamora.

Student: So she’s there [in the Soul Stone]?

Russo: She is in fact, yes.... we don’t like two-dimensional roles or three-dimensional villains. Every villain is a hero in their own story; and as insane and psychotic and brutal and violent as Thanos is he’s a more complex villain, if you go on a journey with him emotionally. He does care about things and it is complicated for him to execute his plan and it cost him something. He said at the end, “It cost him everything.”... the only thing he loved was Gamora, which is why we put him back with her at the end. I just want to reiterate with the audience that he does feel true emotion even though he is a monster."

So look for the story of saving Gamora's soul from inside the Soul Stone to be a part of either next summer's AVENGERS 4 or perhaps in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, which could release in May 2020, but is not confirmed as of the publishing of this post.
