AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Spoiler Discussion About What Happened and What May Come in AVENGERS 4

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is finally out so myself and our MCU Correspondent Nick Whitney decided to have a back-and-forth discussion of many spoiler-y things the occurred in Infinity War.

Here's our discussion... SPOILER ALERTS! ahead...

Nick Whitney: So, something that I immediately noticed about AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR was it didn't feel like a two-and-a-half hour film. The damn thing felt like it opened with a final Act and kept shifting from one team-up to another — something always loved from crossover comic book storylines.

To me, it never let up until it was finally over and I could finally breathe. How do you think they managed all the characters / storylines?
-----

Daniel Wolf: Seriously, this was the fastest 2 hours and 40 minutes of my life. The pacing was so swift the Russo Brothers could easily teach a master course on pacing. There were no abrupt moments in the pacing when changing from one group team-up, with one tone, to another group, with a different tone. I honestly expected that to be a bit more jarring and throw off the pacing a bit when I went in to see it, but after seeing it there was none of that.

I gotta address the elephant in the room, since this is a spoiler discussion, and say that I was shocked at all the deaths at the end because I figured there would be more heroes left to figure out how to fix things in AVENGERS 4. For me, that Loki death hit me the hardest because I did not expect Thanos to be such a badass where he would literally kill Loki with his bare hands... that’s some Darth Vader level villainy right there. Which death hit you the hardest?
-----

NW: Spider-Man, without question.

Tom Holland is a brilliant actor and Peter Parker is possibly my favourite fictional character of all time. I was literally crying behind my 3D glasses whilst he was dying. I spent that last few minutes on the edge of my seat waiting to see who would be snuffed out by Thanos' snap. Once everything was over and we were able to look at exactly who was left, it became a little clearer what Marvel had planned. It seems that in answer to people who complain that there are no stakes in films like this because characters have sequels announced, Marvel have removed all those characters from the board leaving us with the original Phase 1 Avengers heroes; and Rocket [and a few others].

I have conflicting opinions as to whether all the pre-snap deaths will remain permanent, but I think AVENGERS 4 will be the final outing for quite a few heroes as they sacrifice to save the figurative and literal future of the MCU.

On Thanos: What a guy! Not that I think he was in the right or anything, but the CG and Josh Brolin's performance really elevated Thanos to, as you said, Vader levels.

What did you think of the Black Order / Children of Thanos? I loved their looked, especially Ebony Maw, but felt slightly cheated we didn't get more of them.
-----

DW: I felt like the Black Order was simply fight fodder, like the alien Outrider army but with the ability to fight their fight a bit longer. From the moment they were introduced, when I was at Disney’s D23 Expo last summer, I honestly had no investment in any of them due to my instant mindset about them. If I had to pick one standout it would be Ebony Maw, since I enjoyed his monologuing as he was more or less Thanos’ preacher.

Back to the deaths, I too am a big Spider-Man fan (I even have a Spidey tattoo) and his death was painful as Stark held him and he said he was sorry. Regarding pre-snap deaths, I do think Heimdall and Loki are permanent, however, I feel like Gamora’s is not.

After Thanos snapped his fingers, he saw her again as a little girl in a place that had an orange hue throughout and my immediate thought was we were seeing her soul captured inside of the Soul Stone. I bet rescuing her will be a big part of AVENGERS 4, or in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. Any thoughts on this?

Also, it is interesting how the original Avengers roster is intact and it seems to be that their swan song will be to fix this mess in AVENGERS 4 for the future of the MCU. Any thoughts on how they may accomplish this without getting into any pre-existing and possible set photo leaks that may have already revealed teases?
-----

NW: I'm not super familiar with the mechanics of the Soul Stone from the comics, but isn't there meant to be a world or some sort of dimension in there? Perhaps the Russos were toying with us a little bit. What many thought was simply a vision could be a clue to Gamora's fate. Perhaps she's still in there somewhere. I'd certainly like to see her back; Zoe Saldana was the MVP of Infinity War.

With regards to the Phase 1 Avengers being all that's left (plus Rocket), I suspect the fact that Tony Stark and Nebula are stranded on Titan will play a huge part. Avoiding those pesky AVENGERS 4 leaks, I suspect Stark will pick up the remaining team and Nebula will lead them to her father.

A note on Nebula: I've jokingly called her the Gollum of the MCU for years and really think she's going to have a huge impact on how this final confrontation plays out. How do you think it's going to go down? And if you had to guess, what is AVENGERS 4 going to be called?
-----

DW: Don’t get me started about Nebula because I’m no fan at all. She was in my Top 5 dead pool list leading up to the release of the movie. Then, when I saw Thanos torturing her I so wanted her to die right there. It’s a mixture of the character and actress that I’m not a fan of and maybe I’ll get my wish with her ultimate end in AVENGERS 4, haha.

Not to get too spoiler-y about what may come in AVENGERS 4, but there has to be some connection with the Quantum Realm since Ant-Man wasn’t present and that could lead to time travel somehow since I think time is somewhat affected in that realm and perhaps they can harness that to turn back time and fix this mess. Otherwise, I have no real clue how they can correct / undo what Thanos has done. This weekend I’m meeting up with some fellow hardcore comic fan friends and I do look forward to their theories on this.

The title of AVENGERS 4 ... hmmm ... I’ve been considering this and if I’m going to pull from a past comic book story arc events I would have to think “Avengers: Heroes Return” could be a contender. Also, maybe, “Avengers: Disassembled” could be in play, but I’m really just spiballin’ here. What about your title ideas?

How about biggest / funniest moments / surprises? There were so many of them. A few of mine are: the Red Skull reveal, “invisible" Drax, “that’s a man” Drax dialogue, Thanos killing Loki with his bare hands, Thanos thoroughly beating down Hulk, and Steve Rogers introducing himself to Groot. I really could go on and on but these are few of my faves. How about you?
-----

NW: Oh, if we're talking about Quantum Realm stuff then I'm going straight to "Avengers: Forever." I loved that storyline as a kid and it's those comics I credit for getting me into Avengers well before the MCU started. I love the idea of a film that explores its franchise's history whilst setting up the future at the same time. So either that or "Avengers: Infinity Quest" or "Avengers: Thanos War" or something. I don't think the title reveal will be all that mind-blowing.

Biggest surprise for me was the return of the Red Skull. Many of us fans had thought about it over the years but to see it actually happen, and in a way that actually made sense and fit the story, was marvelous. I only found out a few days later that it wasn't Hugo Weaving. No offence to Weaving, but I almost hope we see Skull again.

Funniest moment? I can't quite pick one but it was definitely a Drax line. "WHY is Gamora?!" Also, honourable mention to Peter Dinklage for being one of the nicest surprises and funniest roles.

I just can't believe we have to wait a year for AVENGERS 4. I will say this though, that after credit sting, the first nod to Captain Marvel's presence in the MCU, the fact that she's specifically being called in help with Thanos, making the close release of her solo film to AVENGERS 4 make a weird kind of sense, has me hyped to the roof!
-----

DW: Oh man that Captain Marvel tease! I loved it, especially the use of a pager since that takes me back to my high school days when I (and everyone else I knew) had one, too. Haha.

To wrap this up, I’ll leave you with a thought I would be interested in hearing your response to.

So will Captain Marvel take the role in the comics of Adam Warlock by being the one who can wield the Gauntlet to defeat Thanos? We did see the mold sitting their when Thor went to make Stormbreaker, and Thor saw it too, so it could be in play...
-----

NW: I’m not sure if she’ll take Adam Warlock’s role but damn, I hope so now. I can’t wait to see Carol Danvers in the MCU.
