SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Tracking For $170 Million Domestic Opening in its 4-Day Holiday Weekend

There's been a lot of cautious optimism when it comes to the release of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. This has been felt by both hardcore Star Wars fans as well as the casual moviegoer as the film went through a major change halfway through production when Lucasfilm fired directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Many assumed the film was doomed, but the studio righted the ship quickly by bringing in veteran director Ron Howard to get things back on track.

Now that Disney has AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR in its rearview mirror, their focus is moving toward the release of the Han Solo standalone movie.

The projections are in, via Deadline, for SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY and they are looking much bigger than anticipated for the 4-day Memorial Day holiday weekend. SOLO is looking at a domestic opening haul as high as $170 million. At this number, the Star Wars film would break the 4-day holiday weekend record set in 2007 by another Disney film PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END, which opened at $139 million.

Fandango is also reporting that SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY has bested the 24-hour pre-sale total by BLACK PANTHER earlier this year. BLACK PANTHER went on to make over $1.3 billion in the worldwide box office, but it remains to be seen if SOLO will hit the $1B mark as the summer movie season is beginning to heat up with more competition on more screens.

There may not be any Jedi or Force users in this movie, but the Force looks very strong with the next 'A Star Wars Story' entry into the Star Wars canon.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY releases in the U.S. on May 25.
