GOTHAM Season 4 Episode 19 Review: To Our Deaths and Beyond

This episode starts out with a focus on Barbara’s storyline, and I’m happy to see it progress further. Tabitha asks Selina and Bruce for help, and Bruce probably agrees purely because it means that he can drive around his new car. If he knew what she actually needed him for, he would have never agreed. They needed Bruce’s blood to revive Ra’s Al Ghul. Cut to Ra’s rising from the grave. No one ever stays dead on this show.

Tabitha thought he would get back the Demon’s Head once he rose from the grave, but instead he must take it from her. All those magic books around Barbara and she never once thought to peek at any of them. Tabitha realizes that she messed up; he is going to have to kill her if he ever wants that power back. Selina is also pissed that Tabitha didn’t tell her this plan and that she got Bruce involved in this again.

Ra’s visits Barbara to find out her plans, and is disappointed to find that she just wants to rule Gotham. She was never destined for this. The woman in the picture was just a whore. Barbara get pissed and he fights her and the League of Shadows for the Demon’s Head. Bruce pulls up in his car to drive her away. Look at Bruce riding around with these criminals.

Unfortunately, Bruce knows that he must kill him again because it is part of the ritual. However, Barbara wants to kill him because she thinks it will unlock her full powers. Either way, they need to get the knife back. This leads to Alfred and Tabitha acting as a couple to get the knife back. First, they start with a little bribery, then Alfred fakes a heart attack. I love when Alfred is involved in these things. In the commotion, Selina gets the knife.

Now, Selina must decide who to give the knife to. Bruce and Barbara are really fighting about who is going to commit murder. In the end, Selina goes with the girls. Barbara even steals Bruce’s car. You would think his fancy car would have fingerprint technology or something like that.

Once Selina hears Barbara’s plan, she regrets her decision. Barbara’s plan is awful. Barbara worries that Selina is right, but Tabitha supports her decision. She is down for anything. Selina, however, is not. She leaves and goes back to Bruce. He is sad that Selina betrayed him, and Selina explains that she didn’t want him to have to murder him and become a douchebag all over again. You know she had a good plan when Alfred agrees with her.

At the same time, Barbara puts her plan into motion. She summons Ra’s and starts to talk to him. Barbara wants him to tell her that she is special. He admits to it, and she tries to stab him. It does not work at all. It does cause her powers to jump start, though. Suddenly she can see the future where Ra’s stabs her and she can prevent it. She can see the future where Ra’s kills Tabitha, and after experiencing it firsthand, she knows that she cannot let that happen. She gives up her power to him to save Tabitha’s life. Everyone, frankly, is surprised by this decision. After taking back his powers, he also breaks the knife. I feel like his powers shouldn’t be able to do that. Tabitha is truly grateful to Barbara. The ladies of the League are also quite impressed with her. Even though she no longer has the Demon’s Head, they still stand behind her.

Bruce is trying to figure out how to fix the knife and kill him. Selina tells him to just relax for the night. They are about to kiss when Ra’s shows up. Ra’s tells Bruce that he does like him and respect him. The reason he wants to stay alive is because saw a vision of an awful event about to happen in the city and Ra’s will use that tragedy to mold Bruce into the Dark Knight he is meant to become. It also seems like he just wants to watch the chaos too. I don’t really trust him that much.

Meanwhile, Lee and The Riddler are robbing banks and giving all the money to the poor people of the Narrows. It doesn’t seem like the Riddler would be this charitable, but he is in love with Lee. This man really asks her “what are we?” like a lovesick puppy in high school. He’s really got it bad.

Penguin interrupts their conversation to include him and Butch in the bank robberies. They need some cash if they want to get Butch cured. Penguin tries to convince Lee and Nygma to let them join because he is responsible for their success now, but Lee is not on board with that at all. Criminal politics were never her thing after all. The Riddler quickly agrees with her, and Penguin notices that he is adoring of her. To be fair, his immediate plan upon noticing this was not to hit Lee with a car. Instead, he tries to convince The Riddler that Lee is just using him, but he ignores him.

Once Penguin is gone, we see that The Riddler did take his words to heart. In the mirror, Ed is staring back and taunting him. It’s an interesting change of pace. Ed says that he is still inside of him, controlling his feelings, and that it is only going to get worse.

Even though he is acting oddly, the style of the bank robberies still seems like the Riddler. Gordon goes to Lee to ask questions about the robberies, since he suspects that the Riddler is behind it. He quickly realizes that they are both in it together, and he tries to convince Lee that there are other things she could be doing besides this. Lee says that he doesn’t understand. It’s only a matter of time before Lee and Gordon switch roles, and Gordon shoots her ex Nygma.

The Riddler goes back to Penguin to admit that Lee is using him and ask for help to get rid of Ed entirely. He says that he will include them in the heist for his help, and Penguin is delighted. This saves him the trouble of robbing them later.

When it comes time for the heist, The Riddler and Lee walk in, but Penguin quickly crashes the party. The Riddler holds up his gun to Lee instead. Lee tries to convince him that she wasn’t using him. Yet, the Riddler betrays Penguin and leaves him in a burning room of the Narrows property deeds, and takes Lee with him. Lee is confused as to why he would betray his friends for her. The Riddler knows that Lee is using him, but he knows that Lee will feel the same way eventually. I wonder if he understands how Penguin felt all those seasons ago.

They don’t have time to discuss further. The cops are here and they need to escape. Lee goes out and gets arrested to distract the cops from The Riddler’s escape. Gordon looks incredibly disappointed in her, but if he saw The Riddler with Lee’s lipstick on him he probably would have been even more disappointed.

Overall, this was a jam-packed episode with two very interesting storylines. I am excited to see where they go with both storylines in the future.
