Yesterday, news hit that Fox was delaying both X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX and NEW MUTANTS. The X-Men sequel was delayed from November 2018 to February 2019. While NEW MUTANTS was delayed for the second time; initially from April 2018 to February 2019, then from February 2019 to August 2019.
NEW MUTANTS is rumored to need more horror elements added throughout, however, the total length of its delay (16 months) implies there are bigger issues than a need of more horror elements as actress Maisie Williams is currently filming the final season for GAME OF THRONES. So scheduling its cast members back for reshoots is running amuck for NEW MUTANTS, too.
What was rather unknown was why X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX needed to be delayed. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it is allegedly due its Third Act needing a re-write and reshoots. THR writes:
"The mutant film will now undergo some reshoots as it heads toward a new opening date, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The movie was in postproduction, and insiders say it had come in slightly underbudget. But sources say that the third act will need some reworking, thus reshoots.
"The extent of the new material isn’t known as Simon Kinberg, the X-Men franchise writer-producer who is making his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix, has yet to pen anything. But one insider expects the shoot to cost under $10 million and to take place in late summer/early fall."
Included in this report is how Fox and writer/director Simon Kinberg were looking to push the film back for a while now and it had to do with getting cast back together for these needed reshoots; as well as finding a better release timeframe in order to not face stiffer competition in theaters this November leading into the holiday season.
X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX now releases on February 14, 2019 and NEW MUTANTS releases on August 2, 2019.
