Fans of Marvel's mutant characters have DEADPOOL 2 releasing on May 18, but now have to wait until 2019 to see more mutant characters on the big screen. Fox has announced they have pushed back both X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX and NEW MUTANTS.
X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX was supposed to release later this year, on November 2, but X-Men fans will have to wait until February 14, 2019 for the next ensemble movie to hit theaters.
NEW MUTANTS had already been pushed back once. Originally, the movie was supposed to release next month, on April 18, but it was then moved back to February 22, 2019. It is being pushed a second time and it will now release until August 2, 2019.
No word on why both of these films are being pushed back although one can simply guess they still need more time to get them ready for their respective theatrical releases. Previous rumors about NEW MUTANTS claimed Fox executives wanted more horror in it so more needed to be added through reshoots and in post-production. Yet, being delayed 17 months from it's original release date next month heavily imply there are major issues with this movie.
X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX is producer and writer Simon Kinberg's directoral debut and reports will most likely arise, sooner than later, as to why this X-Men sequel has not been able to meet its initial release date.
Finally, some fans may think this is due to Disney's buyout of Fox's assets — which include all the X-Men, mutants, and Fantastic Four franchise rights. However, the Federal government has yet to approve the buyout and Fox is still functioning as it normally would.
