LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 3 Episode 11 Review: Here I Go Again

It’s no secret that the Legends have always struggled with making new friends. Look at how long it took them to get their footing just working with the core team members (and half of them already sort of knew each other). But every time a new person comes on there’s always an adjustment period. It’s usually an episode or two, but in the case of Zari the idea of being a part of a team is a concept that bears repeating…and repeating…and repeating.

When the episode starts Zari is attempting to hack Gideon so she can run a program she created that will help find the moments in history that she can change to save her brother and the future surrounding that. When the team returns from their Waterloo mission, Sara and Zari get into one of their usual rows centered around Zari not wanting to be a member of Sara’s crew (hey, if she’s giving up her spot, I’d totally take it. Who doesn’t want to be on the Waverider?).

Zari eventually gives in and goes to fix Gideon as Sara ordered, but before she can get very far the ship blows up killing everyone on board.

Which leads Zari right back to the middle of her fight with Sara.

A very confused Zari goes to Mick and asks if he’s ever experienced déjà vu (seriously, you have to be confused if you’re going to Mick for help over anyone else). He dismisses her, which is when she realizes no one else noticed the ship blowing up or any destruction. As Zari tries to explain the situation to Ray and Sara they figure she’s losing her mind and put her under sedation. Over and over again.

But nothing stops Zari from continuing to fight to be heard. Except the ship blowing up. But then she just starts over again. Finally, she goes to Nate (which let’s be honest that’s where she should have started, if anyone is gonna believe in a time loop it’s Nate). He lets her know that when she wakes up she needs to let him know she’s living Groundhog’s Day (the Hedgehog Day moment was pretty priceless).

With Nate (who told Zari that he’s her friend…aw, see Zari they like you) by her side, Zari begins to look for what is causing the ship to blow up. They spy on each member of the team learning new tidbits about each person (like Mick writes romance novels, how cute is that?). They eventually convince Ray to help them spy on Sara (he’s so worried about that secret Constantine gave him that he’ll do anything to protect her), and Zari and Ray shrink down to follow her into the jump ship. There we see that Sara has been having secret phone calls with Ava from the Time Bureau, the one person who actually understands what it’s like to be in Sara’s shoes. We also learn that Sara really wants to help Zari and how much she values her, which is something Zari desperately needs to hear (is it just me or is she kind of acting out like a teenager to their parent?).

But when all of their investigating leads nowhere, and the doom and gloom keeps happening, Zari starts to get more and more defeated, believing maybe there isn’t a way to stop the destruction of the team. Finally, Nate convinces her that maybe it’s time she takes a break from trying to save everyone and uses the loop to actually have a little fun.

So, the Adventures of Zari and Nate begin. It’s a great fun montage, that they even call that (I love how this season Legends has finally decided that what it wants to be is a buddy comedy that just happens to have some serious moments, because those little nods to reality are perfect). But eventually all that fun drives Zari crazy as she starts to realize how much she loves everyone and can’t stand that she can’t save them.

Thinking she’s the problem because it’s her loop, Zari decides she is going to kill herself and end it all, hoping that will save everyone. Sara jumps into action, telling her she is listening, and she wants to help her. That’s when they find Gary from the Time Bureau on the ship in the trash compactor. He tells them that he put them in the loop to give them time to figure out how to stop the ship from blowing up after an alert showed they were going to die. Which, as we know, was working until Mick, thinking Gary was behind the bomb, broke his chrono repeater.

With no way to stop the bomb from exploding and them only having seconds to live, Zari takes the bomb (which is believed to have come from their last mission) and locks herself in the office with the forcefield on. She lets each member of the team know that she’s seen each one of them for who they really are and how much they mean to her individually and as a team. She tells them she won’t let them save her, because it’s the only way they can survive and she has to protect her family.

When the bomb explodes Zari wakes to find herself face to face with a beautiful, yet terrifying, human version of Gideon. Gideon lets Zari know that she has been safe in the med bay the entire time, but her consciousness has been trapped in a simulation created by Gideon to teach her that she needs to stay with the Legends in order to save her brother and the future, but to save herself. Now that she’s learned her value and her place within the team Gideon can return her to the present.

Upon waking, Zari tries to fill everyone in about what happened, including the fact that Ray was told that Sara won’t be able to fend off Mallus again if he possesses her and Constantine’s warning against it (subtle foreshadowing has never been the Legends’ style).

Sara invites Zari to get some coffee and tells her that she will help her save her brother and the future, because it’s not altering the past and she knows what it means to Zari. Finally cementing that feeling of connection and belonging.

But of course, that means something bad has to actually happen, right? Enter Rip. Because he’s been way too quiet this season. Rip shows up to where Wally West is hiding out lost in meditation and tells him he needs his help to save the world. Is there another major crossover coming? Or is Wally just the key to everything? With the end of the season rapidly approaching is Sara’s demon possession going to come to fruition soon leaving Rip to step in as Captain again…at least for a while? There’s so many questions they have yet to answer and so little time to make answers happen! It’s a good thing we’re bringing in Wally, because I have a feeling that things are going to fall apart in a Flash. Until next week, stay legendary.
