AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 9 Review: Best Laid Plans

Given the stakes of this week’s episode and where we leave off, this feel’s like the penultimate episode of the arc. It’s about time, because I’ve yet to truly understand the purpose of this arc. What is SHIELD supposed to accomplish here? Was this all simply to warn them about the impending apocalypse? Because if SHIELD goes back to the present and prevents all this, then this timeline technically never exists. It’s very messy and barely fits together when you think about it.

We’re still unaware of the true nature of what happened on earth. Voss had a different story this week, something about aliens coming through the sky, and SHIELD trying to stop them and failing. Sounds more like Infinity War every week. That said, I’m not sure how this relates back to Daisy. The evidence has been flimsy at best and this only introduces further wrinkles.

It was nice to see the Zephyr again, with all its fancy upgrades and what not. It’s good to see Gravitonium get some kind of pay off since we never saw the villain come to fruition. At least they were able to make use of it somehow. It’s a little bit home, since we’ve been away from the present day for so long. I honestly can’t wait for them to go back. I miss the old sets.

Back on the Lighthouse we had a bit of an uprising going on as Mack and Yo-yo helped everyone gain control of their floors. Even with the threat of annihilation hanging over their heads, the pair were able to become competent leaders. Watching them challenge Cassius only furthers the fact that he is a small man, capable only of cowardly acts. He’s been unmasked now, and that will be his undoing.

It was also a nice touch to see Tess back from the grave – literally. There was even a small reference to Coulson’s resurrection. Tess was easily one of the more interesting new characters in this arc and I’m glad that she was still able to contribute. I hope she’s able to return to the present with the crew but given her situation I’m not hopeful.

We even got a fight scene in low gravity against the bad guy’s lead henchmen. It was well made, I just wish the ending didn’t feel so awkward. Because of the low gravity effect at the end, it looked like Daisy raised that pipe in slow motion. It looked a little silly when Sinara impaled herself on it.

While this storyline has moved at glacial pace, the pieces are finally being put into place for a finale. I’m excited for things to be over, because it means we’ll go back to the present and find out what the point of all this was.
