AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 8 Review: The Last Day

Time is a funny thing. This episode exemplified that. Does it prove that no matter what the SHIELD crew does, this all happens? Or does it mean that people experience different things, despite the changes to the timeline? It’s a little odd, seeing two different versions of events. There’s Robin’s memories, which are obviously that of the timeline where events happened as described: the world ended, the humans fled to the Lighthouse, and the Kree came to “save the day”. But then there are the events we’re currently watching, where team SHIELD is stuck in the future. It’s very circular and hard to understand if you think too much about it. So for now let’s go with the flow.

As it stands, I still have zero idea what any of this is supposed to mean. Were they supposed to get sent to the future, so that they could learn how to prevent the future? And despite everyone saying that Daisy is the one who destroyed the world, I’m not entirely convinced, and neither is she. The “evidence” that Voss showed her isn’t proof at all, and seems a myth based on an assumption. I’m still desperately hoping this ties back into Infinity War somehow, as the Infinity Gauntlet is certainly something powerful enough to crack a planet in half.

This episode teased a lot, but we didn’t really learn a lot. There was a machine that Fitz must have built in Robin’s timeline, which was used in order to bring their past selves into the future. That will no doubt be used to get them back, alongside the piece of the monolith they found. That didn’t appear by accident. May also learned how they could get back, but so far we’re not privy to that information yet. I’m sure that’s something that will come up in the next episode.

The idea of Robin’s life tying in with May’s was a sweet touch. May has really come a long way from where she was at the beginning of the show and something like this is only possible with such growth. Though we never see it come to pass in the present, it’s nice to know that May can step up to the occasion.

Elsewhere, Yo-yo, Mack, and Flint were busy finding their weapons (yay, shotgun axe!) and getting rid of some roaches. So far this story has literally gone nowhere, except that Flint is somehow important to getting them home. This story has already gone on long enough, my hope is that getting the solution means we’re close.
