AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 7 Review: Together or Not at All

At this point I’m beginning to wonder what the point of all this is. This storyline is moving so slowly that I’ve yet to understand the larger picture. There is also so much going on that episodes move an inch at a time. We have the prophecy stuff, the time travel stuff, the Kree stuff, and so on. This story was originally about finding out what was going on, why they were sent to the future, and how do they get back. It’s ballooned so much since then that’s honestly gotten out of hand.

Because of that, this episode moves at the speed of molasses. It’s mostly a reunion episode for the crew as they all finally get back into the same place. Even Deke got in on the reunion. It’s a testament to his uselessness that I had completely forgot what happened to him (getting locked in his room by Mack). Though at this rate I imagine that Deke will return to the present day with the rest of the crew and become a member of the team for the rest of the season.

The meat of the episode was two-fold. One side was the SHIELD crew arguing about what happens next and how to accomplish it. Most of it involved yelling at Deke, which I’m all for. The crew don’t trust him and they have every right not to. It doesn’t help that he still looks like the TV budget version of Star Lord. At the very least the end of this episode means that they’re heading to the surface and we might finally move this story forward.

The other side of the story was Casius dealing with his brotherly trouble. Firstly, his brother is vastly more interesting character than Casius. Maybe it’s because the sniveling coward is such a boring trope. More to the point, it feels like none of this story matters. When SHIELD returns to the present, what will any of this matter? What are the consequences of this storyline?

The idea that Casius and Sonara would kill their respective counterparts could be seen a mile away. So far Casius’ character has progressed on schedule. Whether this means anything in the long run remains to be seen. Will they go down to the surface to find the SHIELD team? Are we finally nearing the conclusion to this long and drawn out storyline? I’m not sure when we’re moving onto the second pod, I but desperately hope that it’s over the next two weeks.
